The Boardroom Ultimatum

Chapter 13 - The Boardroom Ultimatum
Mark brought names.
Three of them.
A former Hale Foundation accountant.
A family-law paralegal.
A reporter who had once investigated Conrad’s political donations.
All had withdrawn complaints after being threatened, sued, or financially ruined.
“Did Conrad order the brick?” I asked.
“I can’t prove that.”
“Then why tell me?”
“Because I’m done helping him.”
I almost asked why now.
I already knew.
Cowardice often ends only when the coward finally realizes the fire can reach his own house.
Mark agreed to testify about the buried background report and the contract Conrad offered afterward.
The next morning, my board summoned me.
Twelve people sat around a polished walnut table.
Most had attended my wedding.
The chairman cleared his throat.
“Daniel, we need stability.”
“You mean silence.”
“We need you to stop discussing the Hale matter publicly.”
“I haven’t discussed it publicly.”
“Your lawyer has turned over documents.”
“To a court.”
“That distinction may not matter to lenders.”
There it was again.
Money dressed as principle.
They offered me a choice.
Sign a statement saying the company had no relevant knowledge of Vanessa’s past and withdraw from all legal involvement.
Or resign.
I looked around the table.
I had built that company from a rented office above a laundromat.
I knew employees’ names.
I had missed birthdays for it.
I had nearly lost my marriage to it before Caroline got sick.
For years, I thought sacrifice proved love.
Now I knew sacrifice could also prove obsession.
“I resign,” I said.
The chairman blinked.
“Daniel, take the night.”
“I’ve taken enough nights.”
I signed nothing.
When I got home, Lily was making grilled cheese with Mrs. Alvarez.
She saw my face.
“You got fired?”
“I quit.”
She considered that.
“Are we poor now?”
I laughed.
“No.”
“Okay.”
Then she went back to buttering bread.
Children have a way of shrinking adult catastrophes to their true size.
My phone rang.
Judith Sloan.
The court had ordered an expedited review of Vanessa’s custody petition.

There would be a hearing in forty-eight hours.
And Vanessa had requested that Noah be placed with her immediately.
