The Thing Charlotte Could Not Undo

Chapter 09 - The Thing Charlotte Could Not Undo
Charlotte had not planned to plant the bracelet.
That was the lie she told herself.
The truth was uglier.
When she recognized Elena outside the penthouse suite that morning, fifteen years of resentment rose inside her with such force that she could barely breathe. She remembered her father’s warnings. She remembered believing Elena had taken her mother’s trust, affection, and perhaps even jewelry.
Then the bracelet disappeared.
Charlotte found it an hour later beneath the lining of her own travel case.
She should have called security.
Instead, she sat on the edge of the bed holding the bracelet and thinking about Elena’s face.
A reckless idea became a decision.
She used the Legacy card to reach the staff level. She had the temporary executive credential to disable the corridor camera. She opened Elena’s locker and placed the bracelet behind the cardigan.
It took less than three minutes.
She told herself Elena would be fired quietly.
She told herself no police would be involved.
She told herself she was correcting an old injustice.
But when the hallway confrontation drew a crowd, Charlotte’s anger took over. When the video spread online, she did nothing to stop it.
Now she stood alone in the boardroom, listening to her father repeat the same poison he had given her for years.
And she finally understood the difference between being lied to and choosing to become a liar.
Her phone buzzed.
A message from Noah Bennett.
I have the locker access log. We need to talk before security contacts the police.
Charlotte stared at the screen.
