The Price of a Perfect Reputation

Chapter 17 - The Price of a Perfect Reputation
Damian’s company collapsed faster than anyone expected.
Banks froze credit lines. Investors withdrew from the waterfront deal. The board removed Damian as president after investigators found that he had hidden company debt and used Eleanor’s assets as collateral.
Employees feared losing their jobs, just as Damian had predicted.
Eleanor refused to let innocent people pay for his crimes.
With Tessa’s help, she negotiated a court-supervised restructuring. Profitable projects continued under new management. Workers kept their positions. Damian’s private holdings, luxury vehicles, and personal accounts were seized to repay Eleanor’s estate and other victims identified at Bellweather.
The public expected Eleanor to celebrate.
She did not.
“This is not a victory party,” she told reporters. “It is an accounting.”
Damian accepted a plea agreement after three former employees agreed to testify. He admitted forging property documents, obstructing an investigation, and participating in elder financial abuse. The judge sentenced him to prison and ordered restitution.
At sentencing, Damian turned toward Eleanor.
“I did everything because Dad left me a failing company,” he said. “You chose Mara. You always chose her.”
Eleanor looked at the son she had once rocked through fevers and waited for outside school.
“I chose you every time I hid what you did,” she said. “That was my mistake.”
He stared at her.
“Love does not mean removing consequences,” she continued. “Sometimes consequences are the last honest thing we can give someone.”
Damian lowered his eyes.
Whether shame had finally reached him, Eleanor could not tell. She no longer needed to know.
Bellweather lost its license. The basement ward closed. Residents were moved to facilities chosen by their families or independent advocates. Simone helped investigators identify twelve people whose money or choices had been controlled illegally.
Walter Kim returned to live near his daughter.
Jake’s garage recovered after the truth became public. Customers arrived from across the county, many carrying apples as a quiet sign of support.
One afternoon, Eleanor visited the shop with Mara.
She handed Jake a folder containing the deed to the old orchard parcel and plans for a new building.
“What am I looking at?” he asked.
“A place where people can ask for help before they end up on a sidewalk.”
The design included legal-aid offices, physical therapy rooms, temporary apartments, and a workshop for wheelchair repairs.
Jake studied the final page.
At the top was the proposed name.
THE RED APPLE CENTER.

At the bottom, Eleanor had written one question.
Will you help me build it?
