The Biker Gave Her One Red Apple—Then the Man in the Black SUV Realized She Was Still Alive

Chapter 01 - The Biker Gave Her One Red Apple—Then the Man in the Black SUV Realized She Was Still Alive

## chapter 01 - The Red Apple at the Red Light

The traffic light had been red for less than thirty seconds when Jake Sullivan noticed the woman on the corner.

She sat in a battered wheelchair beneath the hard California sun, her gray hair loose around a face carved by exhaustion. A piece of torn cardboard rested against her chest. The words had been written in thick black marker: I CAN’T WALK.

Drivers looked away. Some stared straight through her as if she were another traffic sign.

Jake killed the engine of his black-and-green motorcycle and stepped onto the curb. He was still wearing his helmet and armored riding suit, which made the woman shrink back at first. Then he opened the small storage pouch on his bike and took out the only food he had left from lunch—a bright red apple.

“Ma’am,” he said gently, holding it where she could see. “It isn’t much.”

Her eyes lifted to his. They were wet, but not empty. There was intelligence in them, and fear.

She accepted the apple with both hands.

For one strange second, Jake felt as though he had done this before. Not on that corner. Not in that city. Somewhere much farther back, when he had been a hungry boy pretending he was not hungry.

The woman turned the apple slowly. “Red Delicious,” she whispered.

Jake froze.

Only one person in his childhood had ever said the name of an apple as if it were a promise.

Before he could ask her name, the rumble of a large engine rolled up beside them. A black SUV stopped too close to the curb. Its tinted window slid down.

The man behind the wheel wore an expensive navy shirt and a gold watch. His jaw tightened when he saw the woman. The anger on his face was immediate—but it was not the anger of a stranger.

The woman’s fingers closed around Jake’s wrist.

“Please,” she breathed. “Don’t let him take me back.”

The driver opened his door.

Jake glanced from the terrified woman to the man stepping out of the SUV.

“Who is he?” Jake asked.

Her answer was barely louder than the traffic.

“My son.”

Then she looked at the black SUV and added the words that changed everything.

“He told everyone I was dead.”
