Chapter 9 - The Lion Protects His Own

|
The black armored convoy tore through the wet Chicago streets with flashing strobe lights, ignoring every traffic signal.
I sat in the back of the reinforced SUV, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't catch my breath.
Beside me, Luca kept one arm firmly anchored behind my shoulders, his presence an immovable wall of iron.
“Breathe, Emily,” Luca commanded gently, his thumb lightly brushing against my sleeve.
“Nobody is going to hurt your mother.”
“I have eight men permanently stationed inside that hospital wing.”
“Vanessa is bluffing because she is cornered and desperate.”
“What if she isn't?” I sobbed, the terrifying reality of my mother’s vulnerability consuming me.
“She has money, she has connections—”
“She has nothing,” Luca cut in fiercely, turning my face toward his with gentle but unyielding fingers.
“Look at me, Emily.”
I looked into his dark, fierce eyes, finding an ocean of raw, protective power that anchored my spiraling panic.
“You are under my protection now,” Luca promised, each word spoken like a sacred blood oath.
“That means your mother is under my protection.”
“Anyone who threatens what belongs to me will answer to my gun.”
The SUV screeched to a halt outside the private executive entrance of Northwestern Memorial Hospital.
Dante and six heavily armed security operatives leaped out, forming a protective perimeter around Luca and me.
We moved through the private elevators with terrifying speed, arriving on the fourth floor within sixty seconds.
The corridor was completely quiet.
Standing outside room 412 were four of Luca’s private guards, fully armed, looking alert and untouched.
The head guard stepped forward, offering a crisp nod to Luca.
“Everything is secure, Mr. Moretti.”
“Two men attempted to bypass the nurse's station ten minutes ago posing as municipal inspectors.”
“We detained them in the maintenance room downstairs.”
“They were carrying forged security credentials issued by Bellini Logistics.”
A long, shuddering sob tore from my throat as my knees gave out from sheer relief.
Before I could hit the floor, Luca’s strong arms caught me around the waist, lifting me effortlessly against his chest.
He held me tightly against him, letting me bury my face in the lapel of his dark cashmere coat.
For a moment, the entire world vanished.
There was no mafia war, no burned restaurant, no forged contracts.
There was only the steady, rhythmic beat of Luca’s heart beneath my cheek and the warmth of his embrace.
“Go see her,” Luca murmured softly against my hair.
I pulled back, wiping away my tears, and pushed open the door to room 412.
My mother was resting peacefully in the automated medical bed, her breathing calm and steady.
The color had returned to her cheeks, and the state-of-the-art dialysis monitors hummed rhythmically beside her.
She opened her eyes, offering me a weak, loving smile.
“Emily, sweetheart... what is all the commotion outside?” she asked in a frail voice.
I walked to the bedside, taking her warm, fragile hand in both of mine and kissing her knuckles.
“Nothing to worry about, Mom,” I whispered through fresh tears of joy.
“Just good people making sure you're safe.”
I looked back toward the doorway.
Luca stood framed in the threshold, watching us with an expression of profound, unspoken tenderness.
