Chapter 14 - From Maid to Queen

|

Three months later, Grand Avenue was closed to vehicular traffic for five city blocks.

The grand reopening of Trattoria Moretti had turned into the largest neighborhood celebration Chicago had seen in a decade.

Strings of warm fairy lights stretched across the street from brick building to brick building.

The scent of freshly baked focaccia, garlic, and slow-simmered marinara sauce filled the crisp evening air.

Hundreds of local residents, business owners, and city officials filled the newly restored dining room and the open-air patio.

Inside the bustling kitchen, Michael was in his element, laughing as he pulled golden pizzas from the restored brick ovens.

Sitting at the central VIP booth was my mother, looking vibrant, healthy, and happier than I had ever seen her.

Her kidney transplant, fully funded and arranged by Luca at Northwestern Memorial, had been a complete success.

She was laughing heartily with Carlo Vitale, who had flown in from Rome specifically for the grand opening.

I stood near the entrance of the restaurant, watching the joy around me with tears of pure happiness shining in my eyes.

I was wearing a stunning sapphire evening gown that hugged my figure with effortless grace.

A warm, familiar hand slid gently around my waist from behind.

Luca pulled me back against his broad chest, his lips brushing softly against the curve of my neck.

“You're crying, Emily,” Luca murmured, his voice rich and deep with affection.

I turned in his embrace, resting my hands against the crisp lapels of his black tuxedo.

“I'm crying because I'm happy, Luca,” I whispered, looking up into his handsome face.

“Four months ago, I was scrubbing your floors, wondering how I was going to afford my mother’s medicine.”

“I thought my life was defined by the uniforms I had to wear.”

Luca smiled, a rare, breathtaking smile that transformed his fierce features into pure warmth.

“Your worth was never defined by your uniform, Emily.”

“You walked into my life with more courage, loyalty, and honor than every billionaire in this city combined.”

Michael walked out of the kitchen, wiping his hands on a white apron, holding a microphone.

He tapped the microphone twice, cutting through the music and laughter in the room.

“Ladies and gentlemen,” Michael announced, his voice beaming with pride.

“Tonight, we don't just celebrate the return of our father's restaurant.”

“We celebrate the family that saved it.”

The entire crowd erupted into applause, cheering and raising their glasses toward Michael.

Michael smiled, pointing directly toward Luca and me.

“Four months ago, this family almost fell apart because of lies and greed.”

“We are standing here tonight because one incredible woman had the courage to speak the truth when staying silent was easy.”

“To Emily Carter, the heart of the Moretti family!”

The applause roared through the restaurant as my mother wiped a tear from her eye and Carlo Vitale led a standing ovation.

Luca looked down at me, his eyes blazing with an emotion so deep and profound that my breath hitched in my throat.

“Come with me,” Luca whispered, taking my hand and leading me toward the quiet courtyard behind the restaurant.
