Chapter 13 - The Reckoning of the Bellinis

|

Forty-eight hours later, the formal syndicate tribunal convened in the historic vault of the Chicago Union League.

The grand room was lined with marble columns and portraits of the city's founding titans.

Seated on the elevated dais were Don Carmine Falcone, Carlo Vitale, and the five elders of the Midwestern council.

Luca Moretti sat at the center table, looking immaculate in a custom three-piece charcoal suit.

His wounded arm was neatly concealed beneath his tailored sleeve.

Beside him sat Michael, calm and confident, representing the Moretti commercial enterprises.

And sitting beside Luca, holding the official legal files of the syndicate, was me.

I wore an elegant emerald silk blouse and a tailored black skirt, my hair styled in soft waves that framed my face.

Across the room, separated by a row of armed bailiffs, sat Antonio and Vanessa Bellini.

Antonio looked broken, his face bruised and his posture slumped in utter defeat.

Vanessa sat beside him, stripped of her diamond jewelry and designer furs, wearing a plain grey courthouse dress.

Her eyes were hollow, staring at the floor, unable to bear the weight of the room’s collective contempt.

Don Carmine Falcone, the supreme chairman of the tribunal, adjusted his spectacles and picked up the gavel.

“The evidence presented by Signorina Emily Carter has been thoroughly verified by independent forensic auditors,” Falcone declared, his voice booming through the vaulted hall.

“Antonio Bellini has been found guilty of corporate fraud, international racketeering, and attempted fratricidal conspiracy.”

“Vanessa Bellini has been found guilty of complicity in interstate kidnapping and the deliberate falsification of syndicate legal documents.”

Falcone struck the gavel once, the sound cracking like a whip against the stone walls.

“By the unanimous decree of this council, all assets belonging to Bellini Logistics are hereby seized and transferred to the Moretti Reconstruction Trust.”

“Antonio Bellini is remanded to federal custody without bail to face state and federal charges.”

“Vanessa Bellini is permanently stripped of her social standing, her trust funds are dissolved, and she is sentenced to a lifetime ban from the city of Chicago.”

Vanessa burst into frantic, desperate sobs, burying her face in her hands.

Antonio did not even lift his head as federal marshals stepped forward to clamp heavy chains around his wrists and ankles.

As the marshals dragged Antonio toward the side holding cells, Vanessa looked up across the courtroom.

Her tear-streaked eyes landed on me.

She saw me sitting beside Luca, his hand resting openly and protectively over mine on the polished table.

She saw the respect in the eyes of the city's most powerful men as they nodded to me.

Less than two weeks ago, she had dumped wine over my uniform and ordered me to pack my bags.

Now, she was leaving this city in chains, while I sat beside the king she had failed to deceive.

Vanessa’s lips trembled as she whispered a final, soundless plea for mercy.

I did not gloat.

I simply held her gaze with quiet, unshakable dignity until the heavy steel doors closed behind her forever.
