The Federal Indictment

Chapter 08 - The Federal Indictment
By 8:00 AM the following morning, the news hit every major television network across the country like a megaton bomb.
“BREAKING NEWS: MAYOR DAVID MILLER AND SENIOR COUNTY OFFICIALS ARRESTED IN MASSIVE FEDERAL MAFIA AND HOMICIDE SWEEP.”
Live camera feeds displayed Mayor Miller, Victor Vance, Charles Vance, and Eleanor Vance being escorted out of their mansions in handcuffs by federal agents, their faces plastered across national news channels.
Inside the Federal Courthouse in Manhattan, Evelyn Vance held a televised press conference alongside the Director of the FBI.
“Last night,” Evelyn announced into a wall of microphones, her voice ringing with absolute authority, “federal agents recovered the physical remains of Sarah Vance, who was murdered five years ago to cover up a multi-million dollar laundering operation. Thanks to the extraordinary bravery of Claire Vance, we have secured complete digital evidence implicating nineteen high-ranking officials and family members in corporate fraud, murder, and conspiracy.”
Inside a high-security federal holding cell beneath the courthouse, Adrian Vance sat in an orange jumpsuit, his hands cuffed to a heavy steel table.
The heavy door unlocked, and I walked inside, accompanied by two armed federal marshals.
Adrian looked up, his face pale, bruised, and sunken, his arrogant composure completely gone. When he saw me, he forced a weak, bitter sneer.
“Came to gloat, Claire?” Adrian spat, his voice raspy. “You ruined this family. You ruined everything.”
I walked up to the table, looking down at the man I had once believed was my loving husband. I didn't feel rage. I didn't feel fear. I felt only a profound, cold disgust.
“You didn't ruin your family because of me, Adrian,” I said, my voice steady, clear, and quiet. “You ruined your family because you believed pain and intimidation made you invincible. You thought I was weak because I stayed quiet.”
Adrian glared at me, his fists clenching against the steel table. “My lawyers will have me out on bail before the week is over.”
“No, they won't,” I replied, pulling a document from my folder and sliding it across the table to him. “Your uncle and father just accepted a full federal plea deal. They gave prosecutors a signed confession implicating you as the sole killer of Sarah Vance to save themselves from the death penalty.”
Adrian’s breath hitched in his throat. He stared at the signed confession, the color draining completely from his face until he looked like a ghost.
“They betrayed me...?” Adrian stammered, his voice breaking into a pathetic whisper. “My own father...?”

“They treated you the same way you treated everyone else,” I said softly, leaning down close to his face. “You were just a tool to them. And now, you’re going to spend the rest of your natural life in a maximum-security prison cell.”
I turned on my heel and walked out of the interrogation room, leaving Adrian screaming and slamming his cuffed hands against the door as the heavy steel lock clicked shut forever.
