The Safe in the Shadows

Chapter 04 - The Safe in the Shadows

By 3:00 AM, the vineyard estate was officially cordoned off with yellow crime scene tape. Charles, Eleanor, and Adrian were all sitting in separate holding cells at the county jail, while Maya and her children were placed under round-the-clock police protection at a secure location.

I stood inside the forensic tent set up in the driveway, watching as technicians carefully cleaned the rusted steel safe that had been recovered from beneath the basement floorboards.

Dr. Aris, the chief state forensic pathologist, stepped out of the tent, pulling off his latex gloves.

“Mrs. Vance,” Dr. Aris said gently. “The medical examiner has made a preliminary identification. The remains in the cellar belong to Sarah Vance. The cause of death was blunt force trauma to the skull.”

A heavy silence settled over the driveway. Hearing the official confirmation sent a wave of icy coldness through my veins. It could have been me. If I hadn't called 911, if I hadn't stood my ground, I would have ended up beneath that concrete floor just like Sarah.

“What about the safe?” I asked, pointing to the rusted metal box on the examination table.

“Our locksmith just bypassed the secondary tumblers,” Dr. Aris said, gesturing for me to follow him inside the tent.

Inside the safe were three thick leather journals, several flash drives wrapped in waterproof plastic, and a stack of signed financial deeds.

Officer Miller used a gloved hand to lift the top flash drive and plugged it into a ruggedized police laptop on the table.

A folder opened on the screen, displaying hundreds of scanned bank statements, wire transfers, and corporate registration files detailing a vast offshore laundering network operating under the name Valle Vineyards International.

At the bottom of every fraudulent transfer document were three digital signatures: Charles Vance, Adrian Vance, and a third name that made Officer Miller’s breath hitch in his throat.

The third signature belonged to Mayor David Miller—Sergeant Miller’s own brother and the most powerful political figure in the county.

Sergeant Miller froze, staring at his brother’s signature on the screen in absolute, paralyzed disbelief.

“Oh my God...” Miller whispered, his hands trembling as he stared at the laptop.

I looked at Miller, realizing the terrifying scope of what we had just uncovered. This wasn't just a greedy family trying to steal my condo; it was a corrupt political and criminal syndicate that controlled the courts, the police department, and the local government.

Before anyone could speak, the forensic tent flap was yanked open.

Two high-ranking state police captains walked inside, accompanied by a man in an expensive charcoal suit holding a briefcase.

It was Victor Vance—Adrian’s uncle and the chief legal counsel for the city.

“Sergeant Miller,” Victor said, his voice cold and commanding. “Step away from that laptop. By order of the Mayor’s office, this entire investigation is being transferred to the State Internal Affairs Division immediately.”
