Title: The Bloodline of Silence

Chapter 01 - Title: The Bloodline of Silence
Chapter 01 - The Secret Beneath the Floorboards
The faint wail of approaching sirens grew deafening outside the estate, casting red and blue flashing lights through the tall dining-room windows.
Maya leaned toward me over the shattered table, her voice dropping to a terrified whisper: “Tell them to check the basement.”
Charles stood up so fast his wineglass overturned, spilling dark red liquid across the pristine white cloth like fresh blood. “Maya! Keep your mouth shut!”
“No!” Maya screamed, tears streaming down her pale face as she stepped even closer to me. “They did this to his first wife, Claire! Five years ago! They told everyone Sarah ran away with another man, but she didn't leave! She’s under the east cellar floor!”
A cold, suffocating shock swept through the dining room. Several relatives gasped, scrambling away from the table as if the house itself had caught fire. Eleanor’s face went completely translucent, while Charles sank back into his chair, staring at Maya with pure, unadulterated venom.
Adrian’s eyes turned pitch black. He reached into his jacket pocket, but before he could move, the heavy front doors of the mansion were kicked open.
“POLICE! NOBODY MOVE!”
Four uniformed officers and two paramedics rushed into the dining room, their hands resting on their sidearms.
The lead officer, Sergeant Miller, took in the scene in a fraction of a second: the blood dripping down my face, the broken ceramic plate scattered across the table, Maya standing defensively in front of me, and Adrian standing with his hand hidden inside his jacket.
“Hands where we can see them, sir!” Sergeant Miller commanded, unholstering his weapon and pointing it directly at Adrian’s chest.
“Officer, please!” Eleanor shrieked, rushing forward with her hands up. “This is a private family misunderstanding! My son didn't mean to—”
“Ma’am, step back!” the second officer barked, grabbing Eleanor’s arm and shoving her away.
Adrian slowly raised his hands, a terrifying, mocking smile spreading across his lips. “I didn't hit her, Officer. She threw a tantrum, knocked her own plate onto the floor, and cut her own face to frame me.”
“He’s lying!” I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor blade as the paramedics rushed to my side, applying a sterile bandage to my bleeding temple. “He hit me with the plate. And his sister-in-law just confessed that there is a body buried in the basement.”
Sergeant Miller’s eyes snapped to Maya. “Ma’am, is this true?”
Maya nodded frantically, her body shaking with violent sobs. “Yes! Under the concrete slab in the east wine cellar! Check it right now!”
Charles jumped to his feet, screaming at the officers. “She’s insane! She’s mentally unstable! I’m a former county judge, and I demand you remove these women from my property!”
Sergeant Miller pulled his handcuffs from his belt with a metallic click. He stepped past Charles, grabbed Adrian’s wrists, and snapped the steel cuffs around his hands.
“Adrian Vance, you are under arrest for felony domestic assault,” Miller stated firmly. “And officers are going to secure this entire house as a potential crime scene.”

Adrian didn't scream. He didn't fight. As he was led past me in handcuffs, he leaned down close to my ear and whispered six terrifying words:
“You should have taken the twenty-eight hundred, Claire.”
