The Doctor Who Gave Me Hope

Chapter 05 - The Doctor Who Gave Me Hope

Dr. Lena Ortiz didn't promise me a miracle.

That was the first reason I trusted her.

She examined me for nearly two hours.

She tested sensation.

Reflexes.

Muscle activation.

Then she ordered new imaging and reviewed every scan from the night of my accident.

When she finally sat across from me, I prepared myself for disappointment.

"Claire," she said, "your injury is serious."

I nodded.

"But I do not believe anyone can responsibly tell you that improvement is impossible."

I stared at her.

"What are you saying?"

"I'm saying your original injury was classified as incomplete."

I couldn't speak.

Dr. Ortiz turned her monitor toward me.

"Your records show neurological responses during your first months of rehabilitation. There was a recommendation for continued evaluation."

"Why did no one tell me?"

"I can't answer that."

I could.

Daniel.

"Can I walk again?"

Dr. Ortiz paused.

"Maybe."

One word.

Maybe.

It was the most beautiful word I'd heard in eighteen months.

"But recovery isn't binary," she continued. "Walking is not the only measure of success. You may regain strength, sensation, transfer independence, bladder function, balance. We won't know until we try."

Tears filled my eyes.

Not because I was suddenly cured.

Because someone was finally speaking to me like my future still belonged to me.

I began rehabilitation three days later.

Secretly.

My first session was humiliating.

My muscles trembled.

My body refused commands my brain screamed at it.

I went home exhausted.

Daniel kissed my forehead and asked how I'd spent the afternoon.

"Shopping."

The lie tasted bitter.

Two weeks later, during therapy, my right quadriceps contracted.

Barely.

But Dr. Ortiz saw it.

So did I.

I cried so hard I laughed.

For the first time since the accident, I imagined a life that wasn't organized around what Daniel told me I couldn't do.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I ignored it.

It rang again.

And again.

When I finally answered, he didn't say hello.

His voice was ice-cold.

"Where are you, Claire?"

I looked through the clinic window.

May you like

Across the parking lot stood Daniel's black Mercedes.

He already knew.
