The Gift I Almost Ruined

Chapter 15 - The Gift I Almost Ruined

Eli had been accepted into a competitive science program.

He wanted to study biomedical engineering.

At ten.

Apparently, touching strangers' wheelchair footrests had become a career plan.

The tuition was more than June could afford.

"I'll pay," I said immediately.

June frowned.

"No."

"It's nothing."

"That's exactly the problem."

I didn't understand.

Then she sat across from me.

"Claire, you have a good heart. But every time you see a problem, you reach for money."

I felt defensive.

"I'm trying to help."

"I know."

"Then why is that wrong?"

"Because sometimes people need opportunity, not rescue."

The words hit harder than she intended.

Or maybe exactly as hard.

Daniel had controlled me because he believed helping gave him authority.

I would never become Daniel.

But good intentions weren't immunity.

So I listened.

We created a scholarship.

Not for Eli.

For any qualifying student in the district.

Anonymous applications.

Independent selection committee.

Eli applied.

And earned one of twelve places.

When he received the letter, he ran three blocks to show me.

June followed twenty minutes later, furious and laughing.

That night, we celebrated with pizza.

No photographers.

No press releases.

Just pizza.

Eli held up his soda.

"To moving toes."

June groaned.

I raised my glass.

"To annoying children."

Weeks later, Whitmore Home launched another program.

Emergency housing assistance for employees and families facing temporary displacement.

June became one of the program's first paid community advisers.

She knew more about housing insecurity than any executive we'd hired.

For once, I wasn't rescuing her.

I was respecting what she knew.

Life began becoming ordinary again.

Beautifully ordinary.

Then came the day Dr. Ortiz placed two forearm crutches beside me.

My stomach dropped.

"No."

She smiled.

"Interesting. You used to ask when you could try."

"I've changed my mind."

"Too late."

I stood.

One crutch.

Then the other.

My legs shook.

Eli watched through the glass.

"Don't you dare cheer," I warned.

He covered his mouth.

I took one step.

Then another.

Then my left knee buckled.

May you like

The safety harness caught me.

And suddenly, I was terrified to try again.
