The First Step Wasn't Mine

Chapter 13 - The First Step Wasn't Mine

Everyone thinks the first step is the miracle.

They're wrong.

My first step was ugly.

Two therapists supported my hips.

A harness protected me from falling.

My arms carried too much weight.

My left foot barely cleared the floor.

But it moved.

One inch.

I burst into tears.

Dr. Ortiz didn't.

"Again."

I laughed.

"Can I have one emotional moment?"

"You can cry while working."

So I did.

Three months passed.

Some days I gained strength.

Some days my body refused.

I learned recovery wasn't a staircase.

It was a storm.

Progress came sideways.

Then disappeared.

Then returned when I least expected it.

I still used my wheelchair every day.

And something surprising happened.

I stopped hating it.

The chair wasn't my prison.

It was the thing that gave me mobility when my legs couldn't.

Daniel had taught me to see it as proof I was broken.

Dr. Ortiz taught me to see it as equipment.

Eli taught me something else.

He started visiting therapy on Saturdays with June.

One afternoon, I struggled to move my left leg.

"I can't."

Eli sat nearby doing homework.

Without looking up, he said, "You said that last week."

"Thanks for the encouragement."

"You did."

"And?"

"Then you did it."

I laughed.

"You're very annoying."

"My grandma says that too."

My real breakthrough came weeks later.

Not in therapy.

At Whitmore headquarters.

I was rolling toward an elevator when I saw a young employee struggling with a heavy box.

Without thinking, I locked my wheelchair.

Gripped a railing.

Stood.

Balanced.

Reached for the box.

I lasted only seconds.

But the entire hallway went silent.

The employee stared at me.

I sat down again.

"Please don't make this weird."

She started crying.

Then I started crying.

Soon half the hallway was pretending not to cry.

That evening, the video from a security camera somehow reached the board.

I expected congratulations.

Instead, Rebecca called.

"We have a problem."

Daniel had filed a lawsuit.

May you like

He claimed I had destroyed his reputation.

And he wanted millions.
