Chapter 2 - THE MAN IN THE CHARCOAL SUIT

I couldn't stop my hands from shaking.

The dining room fell into a suffocating silence. Forty guests turned their heads, their champagne glasses frozen in mid-air. The man I had pointed to was standing near the fireplace. He wore a charcoal suit, sipping whiskey, looking entirely too comfortable in Luca Moretti’s home.

His name was Marcus Rossi.

He was Luca’s cousin, his most trusted financial advisor, and the second-in-command of the Chicago syndicate.

"Marcus," Luca said. His voice wasn't loud, but it carried a weight that made the temperature in the room drop. "Come here."

Marcus calmly placed his crystal glass on the mantle. He walked toward us, his polished shoes clicking against the hardwood floor. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked at me, his eyes cold and calculating.

"Is there a problem, Luca?" Marcus asked smoothly.

"Sophie says you’re the man who married Vanessa fourteen months ago in Wisconsin," Luca stated. "Is she lying?"

Vanessa let out a breathless, desperate laugh. "Luca, this is insane! I told you, she’s just a maid trying to extort me—"

"Shut up, Vanessa," Luca interrupted, never taking his eyes off his cousin. "Answer the question, Marcus."

Marcus sighed, adjusting his silk tie. "The girl is mistaken. I was in New York fourteen months ago. You know that. I was negotiating the harbor contracts for you."

Answer One: Marcus denies the marriage, providing a solid alibi.

I felt a wave of panic. If Marcus had an alibi, I was going to lose my job, my apartment, and everything I had saved.

"I'm not mistaken," I said, my voice trembling but refusing to break. "You wore a silver tie. And you paid the hotel coordinator with a very specific money clip. It was silver, shaped like a lion’s head, with a ruby in the center."

Marcus froze. Just for a fraction of a second, but Luca saw it.

Open Two: How did I know about the money clip, and why did it make Marcus freeze?

"A lion's head," Luca repeated softly.

He reached into Marcus's jacket pocket before his cousin could react. He pulled out a thick wad of hundred-dollar bills. Holding them together was a silver money clip, shaped exactly like a lion, with a ruby eye.

The reversal happened instantly. Marcus wasn't just a loyal cousin covering for a gold-digger. He was a man caught in a deeply personal lie.

"That clip belonged to my father," Luca said, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "I gave it to you when he died. You're the only person in the world who has it."

Marcus stepped back, the smooth facade cracking. "Luca, I can explain—"

"You introduced her to me," Luca said, stepping closer. "You brought this woman into my home. You pushed for this wedding. Why?"

Vanessa suddenly grabbed Luca’s arm, tears streaming down her face. "He forced me, Luca! Please! He said if I didn't marry you and transfer the estate deeds into his name, he would hurt—"

Marcus struck her.

It was a sharp, brutal backhand that sent Vanessa crashing to the floor. The guests gasped, several women screaming.

Before Marcus could draw the weapon hidden beneath his jacket, Luca moved. He grabbed his cousin by the throat and slammed him against the mahogany staircase, the wood groaning under the impact.

"Clear the room!" Luca roared at his security men.

As the guards began herding the panicked guests out the front doors, I dropped to my knees beside Vanessa. Her lip was bleeding, and her ivory dress was torn.

Her expensive clutch purse had spilled open on the floor. Lip gloss, a compact mirror, and a small, folded piece of paper scattered across the rug.

I reached out to help her gather her things. But as my fingers brushed the paper, it unfolded.

It wasn't a receipt. It was a child’s drawing in crayon. A stick-figure woman holding hands with a little boy. Written at the top in clumsy, childish letters was: To Mommy.

I looked at Vanessa.

"You have a child?" I whispered.

Vanessa snatched the drawing from my hand, her eyes wide with absolute, primal terror.

"He has my son," she choked out, looking at Marcus, who was still pinned against the wall. "And if the wedding doesn't happen tomorrow, Marcus is going to kill him."
