The Answer That Ended My Marriage

Chapter 05 - The Answer That Ended My Marriage
There are sentences a marriage can survive.
I need time.
I made a mistake.
I'm scared.
Then there are sentences that reveal the marriage you thought you had never really existed.
I don't know.
Grant called from outside the door for ten minutes.
I did not answer.
Eventually, his footsteps disappeared.
Diane sat quietly in the chair.
"He loves you," she said.
I laughed once.
"Love without trust is a hostage situation with better furniture."
She lowered her eyes.
I packed the few things I had spread around the motel room.
"Where will you go?"
"My aunt's."
"Lena—"
"I need you to leave too."
She stood.
At the door, Diane paused.
"I know I don't deserve to ask this."
"Then don't."
She nodded.
But before leaving, she said, "Caroline once said almost the same thing."
I looked at her.
"What?"
"She told me love without courage was just another kind of obedience."
Diane walked out.
That afternoon, I drove to Rose's house in my father's old truck.
She had kept it running all these years.
The first time I sat behind the wheel, I cried harder than I had in the motel.
Not because of Walter.
Because the steering wheel still had a shallow cut where my father's wedding ring used to catch.
Rose placed a hand on my shoulder.
"You don't have to solve your father's whole life tonight."
"I know."
"You don't have to save your marriage either."
"I know."
But I did need one answer.
Why had Walter Holloway waited until after I married Grant to try to bury my father's story again?
At the storage unit, we found the wooden toolbox beneath Christmas decorations and old kitchen chairs.
No secret confession.
No perfect evidence.
Only rusted wrenches, gloves, receipts, and a small spiral notebook.
Most pages contained measurements.
Then I found three names.
Walter Holloway.
Martin Voss.
Earl Bennett.
Beside Earl's name, my father had written:
He saw the supports come down.
Rose looked over my shoulder.
"Who is Earl Bennett?"
"I don't know."
My phone rang.
Grant.
I almost ignored it.
Then I answered.
His voice was strained.
"Lena, my father called an emergency board meeting."
"Why are you telling me?"
"Because he told the board you're trying to extort Holloway Development."
I went still.
May you like
Grant continued.
"And because he just froze our joint accounts."
