What We Built Instead

Chapter 19 - What We Built Instead

One year after Rivergate was officially reopened for review, the city approved funding for the Daniel Marlowe Center for Construction Safety.

The center trained workers to report hazards without risking retaliation.

Earl served as an honorary advisor.

Caroline helped build the whistleblower program.

Grant volunteered twice a month.

I became the center's community director.

For the first time in my life, my father's name opened a door instead of closing one.

At the opening ceremony, Diane stood beside Rose.

They were an unlikely pair.

Rose still did not entirely trust her.

Diane had stopped expecting her to.

That was progress.

After the speeches, Grant found me near the back entrance.

"You disappeared," he said.

I raised an eyebrow.

His face changed immediately.

"Bad choice of words."

I laughed.

Then he laughed.

That was progress too.

We walked outside.

The sky was clear.

Grant reached into his jacket.

I stared at him.

"Absolutely not."

He froze.

"What?"

"If that's a giant diamond, put it back."

He opened his hand.

My old wedding ring.

The simple one we bought before Walter replaced it with a family heirloom.

I had left it in the mansion the night I walked out.

"Where did you find that?"

"My mother."

I touched the ring.

Grant did not kneel.

Thank God.

He said, "I'm not asking you to marry me. Technically, you already made that mistake."

I laughed through tears.

"I'm asking whether you'd like to choose me again."

I looked at the man in front of me.

Not Walter's heir.

Not the future CEO.

Grant.

Flawed.

Learning.

Mine only if I remained mine too.

I held out my hand.

He slid the ring onto my finger.

"Yes," I said.

Then I added, "But we're never living in a mansion."

Grant smiled.

"Deal."

Behind us, the center doors opened and a group of apprentices walked inside beneath my father's name.

May you like

That felt like the real proposal.

A future built differently.
