The Guest Who Wasn’t Invited

Chapter 08 - The Guest Who Wasn’t Invited

Luke recognized the black SUV.

It had been parked near the staff entrance since early morning.

The wedding security list showed no vehicle with that plate.

One of the servers remembered the driver.

A man in his fifties, gray suit, no tie, carrying a guest badge.

The problem was, his badge had belonged to someone else.

The actual guest was a retired shipyard supervisor named Robert Ellis who had canceled two days earlier after getting sick.

Someone had used his name to enter my wedding.

Luke pulled the security footage.

The stranger arrived at 9:17 a.m.

At 9:43, he met Uncle Thomas beside the catering trucks.

At 10:05, Grant joined them.

The three men spoke for almost seven minutes.

Grant stared at the screen.

“You don’t know what we discussed.”

“You told me you hadn’t seen Thomas privately in months.”

He had no answer.

The police arrived quietly through the service entrance.

I changed out of my wedding veil before speaking to them.

I left the dress on.

Part of me wanted the absurdity preserved.

I wanted one day to remember that I had worn lace while discovering a financial conspiracy.

The officers took statements and secured the second phone.

They also reviewed the threatening text.

Because the message involved financial harm rather than physical danger, they explained that investigators would need to work with the company’s attorneys and possibly federal authorities if interstate banking or securities violations were involved.

I barely heard the legal distinctions.

I kept thinking about the unknown man.

Then Celeste touched my arm.

“I know him.”

We all turned.

She pointed at the security image.

“His name is Peter Sloan.”

Grant cursed under his breath.

Celeste continued.

“He used to work for Northline.”

“Used to?”

“He told me he was leaving six months ago.”

“Why?”

“He said the company was moving money through fake contracts.”

Grant stepped forward.

“You need to stop talking.”

Celeste looked at him.

“No. I needed to start talking a long time ago.”

There was something almost peaceful in her voice now.

She turned back to me.

“Peter contacted me yesterday.”

My pulse quickened.

“What did he say?”

“He asked if I was still going to let Grant marry you.”

I stared at her.

“You knew yesterday?”

“I knew Grant was lying about us. I didn’t know why he was marrying you until Peter sent me the Northline payment list this morning.”

“Where is that list?”

Celeste opened her purse.

She took out a flash drive.

Grant went completely still.

And that was the moment I understood the most important thing Peter Sloan had done.

He had not come to my wedding to help Thomas.

He had come to make sure the truth reached someone before Thomas could erase it.
