The Message She Held Up Before I Said “I Do”

Chapter 01 - The Message She Held Up Before I Said “I Do”
## chapter 01 - The Woman Behind the Palms
The ocean was bright enough to hurt my eyes.
I remember thinking that as I stood beneath the flower arch with Grant Mercer holding both of my hands. Behind him, the water glittered like broken glass, the string quartet had gone quiet, and our officiant was smiling down at the little leather book that held the vows we had spent six months rewriting.
I was thirty-nine years old, old enough to know marriage was not supposed to feel like a rescue. Grant was forty-three, steady in public, charming without trying too hard, and patient with the fact that I had spent most of my adult life putting my family’s business before myself.
When he squeezed my fingers, I believed I had finally chosen something just for me.
Then I saw the woman behind the palms.
She wore a pale satin dress, not white, but close enough that several guests turned their heads. Her dark hair was pinned loosely at the back of her neck. One hand covered her mouth. The other gripped a black phone so tightly her knuckles had gone pale.
At first I assumed she was a late guest who had become emotional.
Then Grant looked at her.
His face changed.
It was not the face of a man seeing a stranger.
The woman stepped out from the greenery.
“Rebecca,” she said.
She knew my name.
The officiant stopped speaking.
Grant let go of one of my hands.
The woman walked toward us, tears running down her face, but there was nothing theatrical about her. She looked terrified, almost ashamed.
“My name is Celeste Ward,” she said. “You don’t know me. But before you marry him, you need to see this.”
Grant’s jaw tightened.
“Celeste, don’t.”
Those two words were enough to make the entire wedding disappear around me.
Celeste raised her phone.
On the screen was a text conversation with Grant’s name at the top.
The newest message had been sent that morning.
Once Rebecca signs the marital trust amendment tomorrow, the Hale shares can finally be moved. Stay quiet until I call you. After that, we’re done pretending.
For a second, I could not understand what I was reading.
Then I saw the message beneath it.
Three words.
I love you too.
And it had come from Grant.
The man standing beside me.
The man I had been seconds away from marrying.
Grant reached for the phone.
Celeste pulled it back.
I looked at him.
“Tell me it’s fake.”
He opened his mouth.
Nothing came out.
And in the silence before he finally answered, I understood something colder than betrayal.
May you like
He was not afraid I had misunderstood the message.
He was afraid I had seen it at all.
