Chapter 5

Five years after the memorial dinner, Grace no longer thought of herself as the maid who copied the payment list.
Most people around her did not know the story.
She preferred that.
She was director of events at the museum.
She and Vincent had been together four years.
Then married.
Small ceremony.
Independent prenup.
Separate counsel.
Grace kept career.
No Romano board seat.
No household employment.
Good.
The wedding did not use paid access.
Obviously.
Still, Mara Ellison joked:
“Fixed guest list. Zero contribution requirement.”
Grace laughed.
Vincent did not.
Then he did.
Celeste did not attend.
No drama.
Mr. Conti attended.
He gave no envelope.
He brought a terrible bottle of wine.
Vincent said:
“My father would have hated this.”
Mr. Conti answered:
“That’s why I bought it.”
Good.
Then Romano charitable governance became boring.
Annual reports.
Direct grants.
Conflict disclosures.
No memorial seat sales.
One year, donations declined.
A consultant suggested exclusive dinners again.
Vincent asked:
“Can we do it transparently?”
Yes.
Fixed ticket.
Public purpose.
Same price.
Clear tax treatment.
No implied personal access beyond event.
They did.
Good.
The problem had never been fundraising itself.
It was deception and private pricing.
Then Grace’s museum hosted a gala.
One donor offered $100,000 if seated beside a famous artist.
Grace said no.
The donor threatened to withdraw.
He did.
Fine.
Not every dollar deserves authority.
Then Vincent said:
“You left money on the table.”
Grace stared.
He smiled.
“I’m joking.”
“Badly.”
Good.
Then Celeste completed probation.
No public redemption tour.
She started a small event-planning business under her own name.
Could she work?
Yes.
Restrictions:
no Romano branding;
proper client disclosures;
no charitable solicitation without compliance.
Accountability without permanent exile.
Some people refused to hire her.
Others did.
Fine.
Then one article called Vincent “the man who forgave his fiancée.”
He requested correction.
He had not publicly said that.
Good.
Private feelings stay private.
Then Grace’s hand.
Mostly healed.
One scar remained.
She regained full grip.
No miracle because damage had never severed tendon.
Then one evening she sliced apples at home.
Vincent walked in.
Stopped.
“Do you want help?”
“No.”
Then she smiled.
“Actually, yes. You’re faster.”
He took knife.
Good.
Choice.
No ceremony.
Then Salvatore’s legacy giving expanded.
Not as foundation named after him.
Romano Family Charitable Trust increased grants to causes he supported.
Veterans clinic.
Food pantry.
Trade schools.
Hospice.
No claim he would have approved every modern grant.
Trustees decided under current policy.
Good.
Dead people do not govern forever.
Then one grant shifted from church restoration to addiction treatment.
An older relative objected:
“Salvatore never funded that.”
Vincent answered:
“He also didn’t write a permanent list.”
Good.
Legacy is not frozen preference.
Then Grace and Vincent hosted dinner.
Ten guests.
Coincidence.
No seat price.
Everyone laughed when Mr. Conti asked:
“What does my chair cost?”
Vincent answered:
“Nothing.”
Good.
Then Grace looked at table.
Ten people.
Ten seats.
No envelopes.
No hidden amounts.
The symmetry no longer hurt.
Grace and Vincent’s prenup required separate counsel before either spouse could gain authority over the other’s businesses, trusts, or employment decisions. Marriage did not become an automatic board appointment.
That was the fifth correction.
At home, Vincent once offered a visiting relative the museum after-hours for a private tour without asking Grace. She told him he did not control her workplace. He apologized and called the museum like everyone else. Marriage did not merge institutions.
The ten-person dinner became an ordinary memory over time. Some years Grace remembered the apples. Other years she did not think of it at all. Recovery did not require permanent vigilance.
Grace and Vincent’s charitable giving remained separate from their marriage budget. Each could support causes independently. Shared life did not require shared philanthropy in every case.
