Chapter 4

The first annual audit of Romano memorial giving was boring.

Vincent loved it.

No hidden company.

No private account.

No individualized seat price.

Four causes.

Direct transfers.

Published totals.

No donor names unless they opted in.

Good.

Then one problem appeared.

A board member wanted to host a “private legacy dinner” for major donors.

Not inherently wrong.

But invitation language said:

Access reserved for supporters above suggested level.

Vincent stopped it.

“Ticket or donation?”

“Donation.”

“Then why is access conditional?”

Silence.

Policy revised.

If access requires payment, call it a ticket.

If donation is voluntary, attendance cannot depend on amount unless clearly structured as fundraising tier.

Good.

Words matter.

Then Grace became events manager at the museum.

More authority.

That frightened her a little.

She requested:

written food-prep roles;

injury restrictions;

donor interaction boundaries.

Her supervisor laughed.

“You like policies.”

“I like knowing who can tell me to hold a knife.”

Fair.

Then a staff member complained Grace had scheduled too many last-minute shifts.

Grace felt defensive.

She stopped.

Review.

Complaint valid.

She changed process.

Good.

Former victim does not become automatically good manager.

Then Vincent and Grace continued dating.

No rush.

She met his family after a year.

Not as former maid.

As Grace.

One aunt still asked:

“Weren’t you working at the house?”

Grace answered:

“Yes.”

Then changed subject.

No shame.

Then Vincent’s father’s old charitable trust underwent review.

One trustee was Vincent’s uncle.

Another was a retired banker.

Third seat vacant.

Celeste had tried to position herself for that seat before scandal.

Interesting.

Did that create motive?

Partly.

Emails showed she believed successful memorial fundraising would prove she should join trust board.

Not criminal by itself.

But conflict.

Then Vincent said:

“So she was building a résumé with my father’s grief.”

Mara Ellison answered:

“Maybe.”

Then:

“Or she thought she was proving value.”

Good.

No mind-reading certainty.

Then old trust rules.

Board appointments could be made by Romano family chair alone.

Vincent held that power.

He changed it.

Now:

independent nomination committee;

conflict review;

fixed terms;

no automatic spouse seat.

Good.

Then one cousin complained:

“You’re giving away family control.”

Vincent answered:

“I’m giving away unilateral appointment.”

Different.

Then restaurant businesses.

Some memorial donations had been collected through restaurant point-of-sale after Celeste’s events.

Employees were told to ask guests if they wanted to “round up for Salvatore.”

But funds went first into general company account before charity transfer.

Messy.

No theft.

Still poor segregation.

New process:

dedicated merchant code;

monthly reconciliation;

direct remittance.

Good.

Then Grace’s scar.

One evening Vincent noticed her rubbing left palm.

“Does it hurt?”

“Sometimes.”

“Can I see?”

She looked at him.

“No.”

“Okay.”

Two weeks later she showed him herself.

He looked.

No pity.

Then:

“Thank you.”

“For what?”

“Trusting me enough to show me.”

Good.

Then one difficult issue.

Celeste requested to send Grace an apology.

Grace said no.

A year later:

yes.

Written only.

Celeste wrote:

I told myself you were stealing private information.

Then:

I used that story to justify grabbing you because I was afraid you would show Vincent what I had done.

Good.

Then:

I am sorry.

No request for forgiveness.

Grace did not reply.

Choice.

Then Vincent asked:

“Did it help?”

“Some.”

“Do you forgive her?”

“Parts.”

Good.

Then Salvatore’s memorial trust made first major grant after reforms.

Trade-school scholarships.

Applicants chosen by school, not Romano family.

No donor access.

No private dinner.

Vincent attended graduation only because invited.

No speech.

Good.

Then one scholarship recipient thanked him personally.

Vincent said:

“Thank the trust.”

The student looked confused.

Grace smiled.

Institutions should outgrow personalities.

The Romano trust also began publishing administrative costs separately from grants. Donors could see what organizing cost. Transparency did not require pretending events were free to run.

Then Grace returned to the old dining room once.

As guest.

The fruit board was gone.

No green apples.

A different catering company used pears.

Grace laughed.

Vincent asked:

“What?”

“Nothing.”

Good.

The room did not owe her symbolism.

That was the fourth correction.

The trust’s appointment reform included removal procedures too. Fixed terms were not enough if a conflicted trustee could remain until expiration. Power needed an exit before the calendar did.

Grace’s scheduling reform gave staff a predictable notice period and an exception channel for genuine emergencies. Structure did not mean pretending emergencies never happen.
