Chapter 7

Fifteen years after Nora dropped Luca’s birthday cake, a medical ethics program asked to teach the case.

The first proposed title:

THE MAID, THE DEAD WIFE, AND THE WOMAN WHO STOLE HER FAMILY.

“No,” Nora said.

Luca agreed.

Final title:

SUPPORT, INFORMAL AUTHORITY, AND DISCLOSURE AFTER SERIOUS ILLNESS.

Boring.

Excellent.

At the seminar, a student asked:

“Did Camille stalk Luca?”

“No evidence of that.”

Nora answered.

“She knew who he was when they met and did not disclose the prior connection.”

Specific.

Another asked:

“Was Sarah mentally incompetent?”

“No.”

Then:

she had periods of confusion during severe illness;

but records showed intact decision-making when relevant letters were written.

Good.

Then a student asked:

“Was Camille wrong to care about Lily?”

“No.”

Then:

“Care did not make her Lily’s parent.”

Good.

Then Luca spoke.

“The hardest part was that Camille had done genuinely helpful things.”

Pause.

“That made it easier for everyone to ignore where help ended.”

There.

Good.

Then a palliative-care physician asked:

“What should staff do when a patient is exhausted and family keeps visiting?”

Ask patient.

Use clinical limits if needed.

Do not let a volunteer invent the answer.

Good.

Then one student asked Lily, who joined remotely:

“Did reading your mother’s letter help?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“But I’m glad I didn’t read it at eight.”

Good.

Timing matters.

Then:

“Who decided when?”

Lily answered:

“Dad, therapist, and me.”

Good.

No dead letter automatically dictates.

Then seminar discussed child voice.

A child is not sole decision-maker for everything.

But:

preferences matter;

relationship labels matter;

contact matters.

Good.

Then Nora spoke about her injury.

“I reached into broken glass because I thought losing the letter would mean losing proof.”

Pause.

“A safer system would have let me step away and call someone.”

Good.

Heroics not goal.

Then a labor-law professor asked:

“Why didn’t Nora simply refuse Camille?”

Job.

Housing.

Reputation.

Hierarchy.

Good.

Then one student asked Luca:

“Could Camille actually evict Nora?”

“No.”

“Did Nora know that?”

“Not clearly.”

There.

Same issue.

Then seminar added:

perceived authority.

Who appears able to punish?

Good.

Then an organizer asked Nora to pose holding a strawberry cake.

She stared.

“No.”

They apologized.

Good.

Admiration can turn experience into prop.

Then one article about seminar called Sarah’s letter “a prophecy.”

Luca requested correction.

It was a boundary warning based on prior experience.

Not prophecy.

Good.

Then St. Anne’s archive created a case summary without using Sarah’s name.

Good.

Patient privacy.

Then one student asked:

“Should Camille have told Luca on the first date?”

Nora answered:

“Probably early.”

Then:

“But the exact date is less important than the fact she built a serious relationship while keeping a relevant prior connection hidden.”

Good.

No ritualized disclosure rule.

Then Luca admitted:

“I also wanted the relationship to be easy.”

Pause.

“I did not ask enough questions about her work history because I did not want to sound suspicious.”

Good.

Not everything Camille.

Then Lily said:

“Dad, that’s not the same thing.”

He smiled.

“I know.”

Good.

No false equivalence.

Then seminar ended.

Nora and Luca walked outside.

A bakery window displayed strawberry cakes.

Nora looked.

Then kept walking.

No drama.

That was the seventh correction.

The seminar handout distinguished concern, support, substitute decision-making, guardianship, and parental authority. Students initially blended them. By the end, they understood why different words protected different rights.

A student asked whether Sarah’s letter should control Luca’s later marriage choices. The answer was no. It informed him about past conduct; it did not become a dead spouse’s veto.

The university later corrected a slide that called Camille Sarah’s nurse. She was a volunteer coordinator. Less dramatic, more accurate. Nora appreciated the correction.
