Chapter 5

Five years after the ruined strawberry cake, Nora no longer worked in private service.
She was director of facilities at the culinary school.
She and Luca had been together four years.
Then married.
Small ceremony.
Independent prenup.
Separate counsel.
Nora kept career.
No Moretti board role.
No household employment.
Good.
Lily attended.
Fourteen now.
She did not give Nora away.
She did not call her Mom.
Good.
She called her:
“Nora.”
Exactly.
Camille did not attend.
No drama.
Then someone joked:
“At least the cake survived.”
Lily stared.
The guest apologized.
Enough.
Then Sarah’s recipe box stayed in Luca’s kitchen.
Used.
Grease stains.
New cards added.
One from Nora.
One from Lily.
One from Luca that simply said:
ORDER PIZZA.
Good.
No museum.
Then marriage.
Ordinary.
Luca sometimes overprotected Nora’s hands.
One evening she lifted a cast-iron pan.
He said:
“Let me.”
She stared.
He stopped.
“Do you want help?”
“No.”
Good.
Fear can become control even when love is motive.
Then Camille completed probation.
She worked in nonprofit administration outside healthcare and family services.
Could she work again?
Yes.
No permanent exile.
Then one article called her:
THE WOMAN WHO INFILTRATED A WIDOWER’S FAMILY THROUGH HIS DYING WIFE.
Wrong.
She had known Sarah.
She later approached Luca knowingly.
But there was no evidence Sarah sent her, nor that Camille had a plan to take over the family.
Correction.
Good.
Then another article called Sarah:
DELUSIONAL FROM CANCER.
Luca demanded correction.
Medical records documented capacity on the relevant dates.
Good.
Accuracy after death too.
Then Lily’s relationship with Camille.
Years later, Lily chose one letter exchange.
Not reunion.
Camille wrote:
I am sorry I made decisions about you without being your parent.
Lily replied:
I believe you cared about me. I still don’t want a relationship.
Good.
Both can be true.
Then St. Anne’s revised support model.
Volunteers received boundary training.
Patients could name:
support person;
visitor coordinator;
decision-maker.
Different roles.
Good.
Then one patient asked Camille? No, Camille no longer there. Another volunteer overstepped.
The hospital caught it early.
Supervisor corrected.
No scandal.
Good.
Systems catch small failures too.
Then Nora’s culinary school faced a donor issue.
A donor wanted a chef student expelled for criticizing a gala menu.
No authority.
Facilities had nothing to do with academic discipline.
Nora said:
“Wrong department.”
Good.
Role boundaries.
Then Moretti household shrank.
Fewer live-in employees.
Separate housing administrator.
No partner authority.
Good.
Then one staff member ended employment.
Housing transition happened automatically.
No call to Luca.
Perfect.
System did not depend on kindness.
Then Lily turned sixteen.
Asked about Sarah’s illness in more detail.
Luca answered.
Not everything.
Enough.
Then Lily asked:
“Was Mom scared?”
“Yes.”
Good.
“Was she confused?”
“Sometimes when she was very sick.”
Then:
“Was she confused when she wrote the letter?”
“No evidence of that.”
Good.
Specific.
Then Lily said:
“I hate when people use sick like it means stupid.”
Nora looked at her.
“Me too.”
Good.
Then Nora’s birthday came.
Lily baked strawberry cake.
On purpose.
Nora laughed.
“Why strawberry?”
“Because we’re reclaiming nothing.”
Then:
“I just like strawberries.”
Perfect.
That was the fifth correction.
Nora and Luca’s prenup made clear marriage did not grant her authority over Moretti companies, archives, security, staff, or Lily’s relationship with Sarah’s memory. Intimacy was not a job title.
The household’s separate housing administrator later handled a resignation without involving Luca or Nora at all. The employee moved out on schedule, received deposit accounting, and left. Boring was success.
Lily continued adding recipes to Sarah’s box. The object accumulated present-tense family life instead of becoming a sealed memorial.
