Chapter 9

Twenty years after the canceled engagement, event compensation had become more standardized.

Digital timekeeping.

distribution statements.

staff portals.

automatic reconciliation.

Still.

People found ways to misunderstand.

A venue labeled:

TEAM APPRECIATION FEE.

Nobody knew what that meant.

Emma’s old firm asked:

“Who receives it?”

Management stared.

They renamed.

Good.

Then one client used:

SERVICE CHARGE — NOT A GRATUITY — RETAINED BY VENUE.

Clear.

Guests complained.

At least they knew.

Then another:

STAFF GRATUITY POOL.

Clear.

Good.

Language cannot make terms generous.

It can make them honest.

Then Luca, older now, complained:

“Every event invoice is a legal document.”

Emma:

“Every event invoice moves money.”

Good.

Then one old Bellini-style problem returned elsewhere.

An event planner personally promised extra pool to workers without client approval.

Workers expected.

Client refused.

Who pays?

Planner’s company negotiated.

Emma’s firm advised:

authority maps need to include compensation promises.

Good.

Then one employee asked:

“Can supervisors promise bonuses?”

Only within delegated limits.

Again.

Authority.

Then a voice scam hit one of Emma’s former clients.

Caller sounded like owner.

Asked to redirect vendor refund.

Finance callback stopped it.

No loss.

Emma heard.

No panic.

Good.

Old lesson worked in new technology.

Then Luca said:

“Do you think Vanessa would have used this new stuff?”

Emma:

“Maybe.”

Then:

“Doesn’t matter.”

Exactly.

The control does not need to predict the villain.

Then their digital estate.

No shared passwords.

documented emergency contacts.

clear authority.

Luca complained:

“Romance is governance.”

Emma:

“Only if you own too many things.”

Good.

Then one niece asked:

“Did Vanessa steal Grandpa’s wine?”

Emma corrected:

“She tried to sell wine she didn’t own.”

Then:

“Why?”

“To pay a debt before the wedding.”

“What debt?”

“Money owed after event workers were not paid everything records said they should receive.”

The niece frowned.

Less glamorous.

Good.

Then:

“So the wine wasn’t the point?”

“No.”

Exactly.

Then Emma spoke at a conference.

Title:

FROM SERVICE CHARGE TO STAFF DISTRIBUTION: MAKING EVENT MONEY LEGIBLE.

No scandal branding.

Then Q&A:

“What if staff assume a fee is theirs?”

“Do not rely on assumptions.”

Then:

“What if clients assume?”

“Same.”

Good.

Then one attendee asked:

“What if everyone understands informally?”

Emma smiled.

“Until they don’t.”

There.

Then old mansion had been sold.

New owners renovated cellar.

No idea what happened to tasting table.

Fine.

No pilgrimage.

Then twentieth anniversary passed without notice.

Emma realized a month later.

Good.

The body remembered less.

The process remembered more.

Then Celia called.

A client wanted Emma personally because “she’s the famous one.”

Emma declined.

Celia handled.

Good.

Succession.

Then Luca opened cheap wine at home.

Better than the corked Bordeaux.

Emma said:

“Never tell your father.”

“He’s dead.”

“Still.”

Good.

Ordinary marriage.

Twenty years later, the scandal was no longer a wound they had to examine.

It was one reason their systems asked better questions.

The modern payroll platforms made one thing easier: workers could see event distributions themselves instead of waiting for managers. Transparency moved closer to the person affected. Emma liked that more than any executive dashboard.

When a venue asked to hide a retained service fee because competitors did, Emma’s old firm declined the account. Not every client had to be saved from its own choices.
