Chapter 7

Ten years after the breakfast, Matteo was twenty-three and working toward mechanical engineering instead of entering Moretti business. Luca offered logistics, hotels, finance. Matteo said no to all three. Luca pretended outrage and was secretly proud.

Claire and Luca had been married eight years. They chose not to have children together. No replacement family. No symbolic new beginning required.

A cousin once called Claire Matteo's stepmother. Matteo answered, “She's Claire.” Later he added, “She's family.” Both were true.

Vanessa lived abroad and sent occasional cards. Matteo read some, ignored others. Northstar published an anonymized ethics case about “third-party narrative contamination.” Matteo called that a fancy way of saying they believed Vanessa instead of him.

Luca and Claire eventually moved from the large estate to a smaller lake house. The estate became mostly offices and events. Fewer live-in staff. More separation between employment and home.

On Matteo's twenty-third birthday he requested a pancake shaped like a contract. Luca produced a rectangle and declared victory.

Claire's hotel later faced a harassment complaint against the owner's nephew. She used an independent process, substantiated the complaint, and threatened to resign when the owner tried to interfere. The owner backed down. Claire never turned her old injuries into a public credential. She simply used what she had learned.

Matteo introduced a serious partner, Julia. Luca immediately became intrusive. Claire stopped him. Matteo said, “This is why people hide things from you.” Luca heard the sentence. He stopped.

Approaching full trust control, Matteo hired his own financial advisor with no Moretti affiliation. Luca offered recommendations. Matteo declined. Luca accepted.

The original family-transition schedule was shredded after legal retention, leaving one redacted compliance copy. Matteo did not need the private false descriptions preserved forever.

By adulthood the emergency guardianship structure had expired. Vanessa had once spent months building authority that time itself made irrelevant. Matteo found that darkly funny.

Birthday pancakes remained terrible. Some traditions deserved to survive because they had stopped being compulsory.

The guardianship structure sunset automatically at adulthood.

Claire's hotel complaint process reflected the same principle she once needed as staff.

Matteo's financial advisor had no Moretti affiliation.

The original schedule was shredded after legal retention.

The smaller household reduced overlap between work and private family life.

Later review note 1 from this stage recorded a safeguard born from the birthday case: no behavioral note, guardianship proposal, staff complaint, or family-transition plan could be treated as valid unless the affected person knew it existed, the source was identified, and an independent reviewer could challenge the record. The rule mattered because chapter 7 had shown how easily ordinary love, grief, and resistance could be renamed as pathology when only one adult controlled the file.
