Chapter 8

Dating Luca Moretti was less dramatic than people assumed.

Good.

No private jets.

I said no.

No diamonds.

I already spent enough time around jewelry clients.

No security sitting at the next table unless there was a documented threat.

We argued about that one.

Then compromised.

One guard outside.

Far enough away not to hear.

Healthy enough.

Luca was still Luca.

Impatient.

Controlling by reflex.

Used to solving problems with money.

I was still Sophie.

Independent by reflex.

Suspicious of help.

Used to solving problems by working until midnight.

Both patterns could become unhealthy.

Therapy helped.

Money conversations helped more than romance.

One year into dating, my studio furnace failed.

Luca said:

“I’ll replace it.”

I said:

“No.”

He stopped.

Then I looked at the estimate.

“Actually, can you lend me half?”

He smiled.

“Loan agreement?”

“Yes.”

“Interest?”

“Reasonable.”

He laughed.

We wrote it down.

I paid him back.

Accepting help by choice did not erase independence.

Good.

The employee trust reached twenty-one percent after another settlement.

Workers chose not to pursue the full thirty because litigation risk was high.

Some activists criticized.

Some praised.

Not my decision.

Good.

Enzo died in prison medical care.

No last confession.

No dramatic secret.

Vanessa attended the funeral privately.

Luca did not.

Fine.

Then the university archive asked if I wanted Nora’s letters included.

I gave professional letters.

Kept personal ones.

One letter described my first day of school.

Not history’s business.

Good.

The brass tag 317 stayed with me.

Not the key.

The tag.

Why?

Because it belonged to my mother’s sewing tin.

The archive asked.

I said no.

Simple.

Then Luca proposed.

Not in my shop.

Thank God.

Not with a wedding dress anywhere nearby.

In our kitchen.

He held no ring at first.

“Would you consider marrying me?”

I laughed.

“Consider?”

“Yes.”

“Good wording.”

“I practiced.”

Of course.

I said:

“Yes.”

Then:

“But.”

He smiled.

“Of course.”

Independent prenup lawyers.

Separate business ownership.

No Moretti board position for me.

No automatic access to my studio.

No using my shop for family clothing without normal booking.

He stared at that one.

“Seriously?”

“Yes.”

“Fine.”

No family heirloom gown.

No hidden seams.

No keys.

Small wedding.

He agreed.

Then produced a simple ring.

New.

No family history.

Good.

Vanessa heard through counsel and sent one line:

I hope the dress has no pockets.

I laughed.

Luca did not.

Too soon for him.

Fine.

Our wedding had forty-six guests.

No Moretti cathedral.

No St. Agnes crypt.

Garden.

Daylight.

My dress was simple.

I made it myself.

Luca asked three times if there were hidden keys.

I threatened to cancel.

He stopped.

Maya helped with the hem.

Paid hours.

Of course.

At dinner, one guest asked about Vanessa.

I changed the subject.

My wedding was not sequel content for someone else’s scandal.

Good.

The vows were short.

Luca said:

“I promise not to confuse protection with permission.”

I said:

“I promise not to confuse needing help with losing myself.”

Both learned.

Then normal life.

Arguments.

Dishes.

Work.

His terrible coffee.

My habit of leaving pins everywhere.

One morning he stepped on one.

He said several words unsuitable for breakfast.

I laughed until I cried.

Normal.

Good.

The worker trust annual report later showed complaint numbers rising.

Investors panicked.

Independent review found employees trusted reporting more.

Visibility can look worse before improvement.

Same lesson.

Then a young employee at my studio told me her landlord suddenly doubled rent after she complained about a contractor client.

My stomach tightened.

We documented.

Legal aid.

No personal Moretti intervention.

The retaliation stopped.

Before bruises.

Before midnight coercion.

Before hidden keys.

That was victory.

Not Enzo’s conviction.

Not Carlo’s confession.

A young tailor being believed before someone hurt her.

That became the story I cared about most.

The prenup explicitly stated Sophie’s company would never be treated as a preferred Moretti vendor. Her business remained hers.

The garden wedding used an independent venue. No family crypt, no corporate property, no inherited ritual.

Vanessa’s one-line joke about pockets arrived through counsel because direct contact was still restricted. Sophie laughed privately and did not answer.

The young tailor’s landlord retaliation case was handled by legal aid before Luca even heard about it. Sophie considered that a sign of progress.

Luca learned not to send security after Sophie without asking unless there was a documented imminent threat. That clause had caused two arguments and then became normal.

The wedding dress Sophie made for herself had one visible pocket. Nothing hidden. She found that funny.

Years later, Sophie would connect this stage to one additional safeguard numbered 7: important records had to be independently reviewable, retaliation complaints had to bypass family authority, and no one person's good intentions could substitute for written limits.
