Chapter 7

Three years later, the employee trust owned eighteen percent of Moretti Holdings.

Not thirty.

The final settlement was complicated.

Valuation disputes.

Tax issues.

Prior transfers.

Some assets excluded.

Some included.

Workers voted on the settlement.

Not unanimous.

Good.

No fairy-tale ending.

Eighteen percent still changed governance.

Two worker-elected board seats.

Independent benefit committee.

Public conflict rules.

No family member could privately veto trust distributions.

Luca retained substantial ownership.

Enzo’s hidden trusts were unwound.

Vanessa received a smaller lawful inheritance through Enzo’s personal estate planning.

No control over Luca’s branch.

Good.

The family did not merge.

It separated honestly.

That felt healthier.

Enzo accepted a plea agreement on some charges.

Prison.

Fines.

Civil restitution.

He never apologized publicly.

Maybe privately to Vanessa.

Not my business.

Kessler served time.

Leonard Voss lost his license.

Died two years later.

No memorial.

Carlo remained dead.

Actually dead.

Good.

Vanessa completed sentence and treatment requirements.

Then moved out of Chicago.

She and Luca did not reconcile.

Fine.

Some relationships should not become redemption stories.

My alterations business grew.

I hired one employee.

Then three.

Written hours.

Overtime.

No cash pressure.

No “family” language as substitute for pay.

I had learned.

One day a landlord offered cheap expansion space.

Owned by Moretti Holdings.

I said no.

Luca heard and laughed.

“You think I arranged it.”

“Did you?”

“No.”

“Then I still don’t want it.”

“Fair.”

I rented somewhere else.

More expensive.

Worth it.

Boundaries cost something.

Otherwise they are decoration.

Luca and I became friends slowly.

Coffee.

Occasional dinner.

No secret meetings.

No rescue.

He asked once if I wanted to attend a worker-trust meeting because of Nora’s role.

I said no.

He accepted.

Good.

My mother’s history did not become my job.

Then a museum curator asked to display the wedding dress.

Absolutely not.

Why?

“It represents the concealed-key network.”

I said:

“It represents unpaid labor and a bad night in my shop.”

Different.

They used photographs instead.

My bruised-face photo?

No.

I had never consented.

Good.

The brass key went on display eventually.

Not as glamorous artifact.

Caption:

KEY 317 — used in a document-concealment route involving family garments and private storage.

No Sophie hero label.

Better.

Then Luca learned something unexpected about Carlo.

One Buenos Aires letter described seeing him from across a street in Chicago two years after the fake death.

Carlo had returned once.

Saw Luca leaving a restaurant.

Did not approach.

Why?

“I was ashamed.”

Luca read it.

Then folded it.

“That word gets expensive.”

Yes.

Shame can look passive while making active choices.

Then Vanessa sent Luca a letter.

He told me only because I asked if she ever contacted him.

She wrote:

“I am sorry I let my father turn marriage into strategy.”

Then:

“I did love you.”

Luca never answered.

His choice.

Then one evening he asked me:

“Do you think people can love someone and still use them?”

“Yes.”

He looked unhappy.

“Helpful.”

“Sorry.”

“No. Accurate.”

Good.

Then he asked:

“Do you think that means the love was fake?”

“No.”

He waited.

“It means love was not enough to make the behavior safe.”

He nodded.

That became one of the truest things in the whole story.

The Moretti worker trust later found a current manager pressuring employees to support a board candidate by implying benefit access could change.

Small compared with Enzo.

Same architecture.

The trust investigated.

Manager removed.

Benefits protected.

No scandal.

Good.

System worked before someone got hit.

That mattered.

My shop had a young tailor named Maya.

One night she stayed late.

I asked why.

“Need money.”

“Overtime is approved.”

She looked surprised.

“No catch?”

“No.”

The sentence hurt.

Because I remembered being twenty-nine.

Seventy-eight dollars from disaster.

Working midnight on someone else’s wedding dress.

I said:

“And if you need a cart, use a cart.”

She laughed.

Wrong story.

Still same lesson.

Then Luca came in with a torn jacket.

I stared.

“What happened?”

“Chair.”

“Did Vanessa push you into it?”

He froze.

Then laughed.

Dark humor.

Old ghost.

I repaired the sleeve.

Charged him full price.

He paid.

No tip large enough to become weird.

Growth.

At closing, he paused by the door.

“Sophie.”

“Yes?”

“Dinner sometime?”

I looked at him.

Not business.

Not evidence.

Not guilt.

Maybe something else.

“Maybe.”

He smiled.

“Maybe is not yes.”

“I know.”

Good.

The next week, I said yes.

The employee trust’s eighteen-percent settlement included anti-dilution protections so family owners could not quietly erase worker influence through new shares.

Sophie’s refusal of Moretti-owned expansion space cost her more in rent. She considered the expense cheaper than ambiguity.

Luca’s friendship with Sophie developed outside the investigation. Months sometimes passed without discussing Enzo, Vanessa, or Carlo.

The museum accepted Sophie’s refusal to provide injury photographs. Education did not require visual ownership of her body.

The current benefit-pressure case at Moretti Holdings was reported by an employee who never met Luca. That was exactly how a real system should work.

Maya’s overtime policy became written because Sophie did not want kindness to depend on her remembering her own past.

Years later, Sophie would connect this stage to one additional safeguard numbered 7: important records had to be independently reviewable, retaliation complaints had to bypass family authority, and no one person's good intentions could substitute for written limits.
