Chapter 3

Grace Mercer did not want to come to the Moretti estate.
Good.
Neither did I.
We met at Nadia’s office.
Neutral.
Grace was sixty-eight.
Short gray hair.
Hands that shook when she opened a folder.
She looked at me for a long time.
“Nora’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“You look like her around the eyes.”
Maybe.
People say that.
I did not need it to be true.
Then:
“I’m sorry.”
“For?”
“For making the account.”
There.
She did not start with excuses.
Good.
“What was Mercer House Services?”
“Me.”
“Meaning?”
“Antonio Moretti told me to create a vendor code for household staffing expenses that owners didn’t want on normal payroll.”
“Illegal?”
“Some parts.”
“Which?”
“Cash bonuses.”
“Recruitment advances.”
“Transportation.”
“Some legitimate reimbursements.”
“And worker deductions?”
She closed eyes.
“That became the problem.”
At first, workers borrowed for relocation.
Agreed deductions.
Then managers realized they could keep deductions running.
Because workers did not understand statements.
Some did not speak English well.
Some feared immigration consequences.
There.
Exploitation.
Grace continued:
“Nora understood numbers.”
Of course.
“She asked why balance didn’t fall.”
“What did you tell her?”
“The truth.”
Good.
“Why?”
“I was tired.”
Then Nora compared payroll slips.
Found deductions after balance cleared.
She started collecting copies from coworkers.
Victor Bellini found out.
Antonio Moretti found out.
They called Grace in.
What happened?
“They told me to say software error.”
“Was it?”
“No.”
“Who ordered continued deductions?”
“Household managers, sometimes owners.”
“Victor?”
“Yes.”
“Antonio?”
“Yes.”
There.
No clean side.
Then Grace said:
“Not every deduction went to them.”
“Where else?”
“Emergency fund.”
“For workers?”
“Yes.”
“Did workers control it?”
“No.”
There.
Again benevolence with stolen money.
Then:
“Some paid immigration lawyers.”
“Some funeral travel.”
“Some rent.”
“Some owners called that justification.”
“Was it?”
“No.”
Good.
Then why account named Mercer?
Antonio said generic.
Grace volunteered.
Her mistake.
Then she kept copies.
Why?
“Nora told me to.”
My throat tightened.
“She said if they make us disappear from payroll, paper should remember.”
Good.
Then Grace opened folder.
Photocopies.
Payroll runs.
Owner instructions.
One signed Victor Bellini.
One signed Antonio Moretti.
One signed Elena Moretti?
I froze.
Grace saw.
“Elena signed later.”
“For what?”
“Repayment authorization.”
Good.
Not exploitation order.
Need precise.
Then one document:
ELENA MORETTI — MERCER CORRECTION PLAN.
List of 23 workers.
Amounts estimated.
Nora Walsh:
$18,440.
Why more than earlier?
Includes interest maybe.
Payment status:
REFUSED PENDING RECORD CORRECTION.
There.
Mom refused.
Then:
Hollis Grant:
PAID.
That explained.
Then Elena’s plan had note:
Full disclosure to workers not yet completed.
Bad.
She made unilateral fixes.
Then Grace said:
“Elena wanted quiet.”
“Why?”
“Antonio was sick?”
No.
Could be family company public offering? Let's choose Moretti Hotels refinancing.
“She said a criminal investigation would collapse a refinancing and cost thousands of legitimate workers jobs.”
Classic justification.
Maybe partly true.
Still paternalistic.
Then Nora told her:
“You don’t get to steal choice because consequences are expensive.”
My eyes filled.
That sounded like Mom.
Then Grace said:
“Elena cried.”
“Did that change anything?”
“No.”
Good.
Then eventually Elena shut Moretti Domestic Services down.
Workers moved to direct payroll or agencies.
Some got repayment.
Some didn’t.
Grace left.
Arthur Vale audited privately.
Why Arthur?
Elena hired him to calculate.
He kept originals.
Then Bellini resisted.
Victor did not correct Nora record.
Nora refused settlement.
Then she left domestic service entirely.
Worked school cafeteria.
Now it made sense.
Then Grace showed one more paper.
Nora’s own handwritten list.
Names of twelve workers.
At bottom:
IF THEY PAY ME AND NOT THEM, IT IS A BRIBE.
Strong.
Maybe she refused because collective resolution.
Then Nadia asked:
“Did Nora authorize anyone to negotiate for others?”
“No.”
Good.
She was advocate, not representative.
Then each worker claim separate.
Important.
Then Grace looked at me.
“Your mother was angry.”
“Good.”
“She was also scared.”
“Good.”
“She almost took money.”
I looked up.
“Really?”
“Yes.”
“She needed rent.”
Human.
“What stopped her?”
“Victor’s correction clause.”
He required confidentiality and no admission.
There.
She might have taken money if truth not erased.
Good.
No saint.
Then Grace said:
“She told me, ‘I can live with money. I can’t live with them writing that I stole.’”
My throat closed.
Then Dorian arrived only after Grace agreed.
She had wanted to tell him too.
He sat across.
No entourage.
She looked at him.
“You have Antonio’s eyes.”
He stiffened.
“Sorry.”
“Everyone says that.”
Then she said:
“Your father knew.”
“I know.”
“He also paid some workers later.”
“I know.”
“He never admitted.”
“I know.”
Then:
“Do not make him a monster because it lets everyone else off.”
Good.
Dorian looked at her.
“Who else?”
“Managers.”
“Lawyers.”
“Payroll.”
“Me.”
“Your mother.”
Silence.
“Elena?”
“Yes.”
“She stopped it.”
“Yes.”
“She also kept it private.”
“Yes.”
There.
Then Grace gave him one letter from Elena.
Not sealed family confession.
A memo to Grace.
Grace,
I am choosing speed over public accountability because I believe workers need money now.
Nora says I am deciding for them.
She is right.
I do not know how to fix both.
Dorian stared.
His mother knew flaw in real time.
Still chose.
Human.
Then another:
If I die before records are corrected, give Arthur everything.
Do not give Antonio originals.
Good.
Then Grace asked:
“Do you hate her?”
Dorian took time.
“No.”
“Good.”
“Do you excuse her?”
“No.”
“Also good.”
Then worker review.
Independent nonprofit invited to lead outreach.
Dorian funded but no control.
Bellini current company? Victor resisted.
Court motions.
Maybe.
Then Vanessa.
She had been charged with assault? Police referred. Her lawyer negotiated later. For now pending.
She sent through counsel an offer to provide Bellini archive.
In exchange for no condition? She offered cooperation because she realized father lied.
Good.
No immunity guaranteed.
She produced:
Household payroll memos.
Victor’s notes.
Nora reference history.
There.
One note:
Do not place Walsh again.
Reason:
Dishonest / disruptive.
No evidence.
Then another from Elena:
Remove dishonest designation.
Bellini HR response:
Owner override denied.
Victor.
There.
He personally blocked.
Then current Bellini company still had archived black mark.
Nadia demanded correction.
They issued.
Publicly? With Emma consent.
I said yes.
Statement:
Nora Walsh was improperly designated as dishonest after reporting wage deductions. Bellini records contained no substantiated theft finding.
Good.
Then my mother's school employment references maybe not affected much.
Still.
Record corrected.
Then money.
What would current value be?
$18,440 plus interest over 24 years could become ~50k-100k. Add damages perhaps.
Nadia said don't guess until audit.
Good.
Then Arthur Vale.
He was declining.
I decided to speak.
Video call.
He looked fragile.
“Emma.”
“Yes.”
“I failed your mother.”
“What did you do?”
“I calculated what she was owed.”
“And?”
“I let Elena keep report private.”
“Why?”
“She paid me.”
There.
“To hide?”
“To audit privately.”
“Did contract forbid reporting?”
“No.”
“Then why didn’t you?”
“I told myself I was accountant, not policeman.”
Silence.
Good.
Then:
“I was afraid of losing clients.”
Honest.
“Did Mom hate you?”
He smiled faintly.
“Yes.”
I almost laughed.
“Good.”
“She called me expensive coward.”
Definitely Mom.
Then he said:
“She later forgave me a little.”
“How do you know?”
“She mailed Christmas card.”
Human.
Then:
“Why bring file now?”
“Cancer.”
“That’s not courage.”
He smiled sadly.
“No.”
Good.
I appreciated no redemption claim.
Then he said:
“There is one thing Nora never knew.”
My stomach tightened.
“What?”
“The Mercer account still exists.”
Silence.
How?
As dormant trust account.
Balance?
He did not know current.
Original emergency fund had never been fully distributed.
Maybe hundreds thousands plus growth.
Who owns?
Workers.
Not families.
Then Grace confirmed.
Account successor at bank converted to “Mercer Employee Relief Trust.”
Trustees dead/retired.
No distributions for years.
Current balance:
$3.8 million.
There.
Whose money?
Mix of worker deductions and owner contributions.
Need forensic tracing.
Cannot just hand Emma.
Good.
Then Dorian said:
“Independent trustee.”
Nadia said:
“Worker-elected if documents allow.”
Good.
They reviewed trust instrument.
Elena had created after closing account.
Successor trustees chosen by beneficiaries.
Excellent.
Forty-two identifiable beneficiaries/heirs.
Outreach.
No Moretti control.
Then one beneficiary:
Hollis Grant.
He had been overcharged and repaid.
Is he beneficiary of trust? Maybe residual based on deductions.
Yes.
Complicated because he assaulted me.
Being perpetrator now does not erase old wage claim.
Hard.
I said:
“He should get what is legally his.”
Nadia looked at me.
“You sure?”
“Yes.”
“His assault case separate.”
Good.
Separation.
Then Vanessa also? She was not worker.
No.
Then Victor’s legal team claimed trust funds included Bellini contributions and should revert.
Documents say contributions irrevocable.
Bad for him.
Then Dorian smiled coldly.
“Should have read.”
Nadia looked.
“Do not gloat yet.”
Good.
Then one more shock.
Grace’s folder had a photograph.
Nora.
Grace.
Hollis.
Young.
All three outside Moretti service office.
I stared.
“Mom knew Hollis.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“They were placed same month.”
Silence.
Hollis had known exactly who I was from the day I was hired.
He never told me.
Why?
Grace looked sad.
“Nora once helped him prove his balance was wrong.”
So my mother helped Hollis.
Elena repaid him.
Years later, Hollis held Nora’s daughter underwater to protect Elena’s reputation.
My stomach turned.
Then Dorian said nothing.
Nothing could make that contradiction neat.
Then Daniel called.
Hollis had asked to amend statement.
Why?
He had not told police everything about envelope.
Arthur’s envelope contained one more item.
A photograph.
Nora Walsh with Elena Moretti.
On back, Elena wrote:
SHE WAS RIGHT.
Hollis had taken the photograph out before Vanessa grabbed file.
Where was it?
His room.
Police recovered.
No hidden inheritance.
No secret child.
Just two women standing outside a payroll office.
One rich.
One employee.
Both looking angry.
And three words written years later by the woman who had power:
SHE WAS RIGHT.
I cried when I saw it.
Not because Elena’s approval made Mom right.
Mom had been right already.
May you like
But because someone with power had known.
And had finally written it down.
