Chapter 2

I did not sleep.

Hospitals are bad at sleep anyway.

Machines.

Doors.

Shoes in hall.

And now my mother’s name sat inside a dead woman’s hidden payroll index.

NORA WALSH.

BELLINI HOUSEHOLD.

DISPUTED DEBT.

RELEASE AUTHORIZED: E. MORETTI.

I stared at the photograph Daniel had sent my lawyer.

My lawyer.

That felt new.

Dorian’s counsel had offered someone.

I said no.

Good.

The hospital social worker gave me three employment-law referrals.

I chose Priya Shah.

Different Priya from another universe? Doesn't matter, but perhaps avoid repeating. Let's use Nadia Brooks.

Nadia Brooks.

Labor and employment.

Sharp.

No family connections.

Her first sentence:

“You are not responsible for solving the Moretti archive.”

I liked her immediately.

Then:

“You are a witness and an assault victim.”

That word again.

Victim.

I hated it.

Still accurate.

Then:

“If the Nora Walsh file concerns your mother, that is separate.”

Good.

Separate matters.

Boundaries.

At ten in the morning, Arthur Vale agreed to speak with police from hospice.

Dorian’s investigator did not interview first.

Good.

Police.

Then Nadia and I received a summary with my consent.

Arthur admitted he had carried:

One safe key.

One original Nora Walsh file.

One handwritten ledger supplement.

Why bring Nora file separately?

Because Elena Moretti had given it to him before she died.

“What did she want?”

Return to Nora.

But Nora died before Arthur found her.

How?

He had lost contact.

Then he learned Emma worked at Moretti estate?

No.

He only learned after seeing staff roster through Hollis months ago.

Why not contact me directly?

Arthur said:

“I was afraid.”

Of Bellinis.

Still.

Then why now?

Cancer.

No time.

Fine.

Then the envelope.

Hollis took it.

Where did he put?

He told police:

In the silver cabinet behind wine pantry.

They searched.

Envelope gone.

Who had access?

Hollis.

Vanessa.

Two senior staff.

Dorian.

Daniel.

Maybe.

Security footage.

Vanessa entered wine pantry fifteen minutes after bath-suite incident.

There.

She had time before Dorian found me? Wait Dorian came while I was still in tub. Could have been earlier? Need timeline. Maybe after Hollis took envelope and before bath suite, Vanessa briefly went pantry. Fine.

Then she returned.

Police recovered shredded paper in kitchen service shred bin.

Partial.

NORA WALSH.

Bellini letterhead.

No full file.

Maybe Vanessa destroyed.

She denied.

Need evidence.

Then her lawyer offered location of remaining pages.

In exchange? No, cooperation.

She had taken file and hidden in guest-room safe, not shredded. Shredded paper was copy? Better.

She admitted taking envelope from Hollis.

Why?

“My father told me Nora Walsh could destroy him.”

There.

Victor Bellini.

Again.

Then she opened envelope.

Read.

What did it contain?

My mother’s employment contract.

Debt schedule.

Wage records.

One complaint.

And a settlement letter signed by Elena Moretti.

Vanessa panicked.

She removed one page and shredded it.

Which?

A handwritten statement from Victor.

Twenty-four years ago.

What did it say?

She had photographed before shredding? Her phone.

Police recovered deleted image.

Good.

Statement:

I knew Nora Walsh’s debt balance had been cleared.

I instructed household office to continue deductions because she had witnessed the Mercer account.

Silence.

The Mercer account.

What was that?

Arthur Vale explained.

A slush account funded by deductions from domestic workers.

Not millions maybe.

Hundreds thousands.

Used for off-books bonuses and private expenses.

Named after fictitious vendor Mercer House Services.

Victor knew.

Maybe his father too.

Nora saw.

She complained.

Then Victor continued deductions after debt cleared to discredit/pressure her.

There.

Then Elena Moretti found out.

Why involved?

Moretti Domestic Services placed workers in Bellini homes.

She audited after another complaint.

She released Nora from arrangement, repaid some wages, and kept original file to preserve proof.

Did Nora get fully paid?

Arthur did not know.

Need audit.

Then Dorian came to hospital.

He asked through Nadia.

Good.

I agreed.

He looked exhausted.

No suit jacket.

Still controlled.

He sat.

“Nora was your mother.”

“Yes.”

“I’m sorry.”

“You didn’t know.”

“No.”

Then:

“My mother did.”

“Yes.”

“That is difficult.”

I understood.

Then Nadia said:

“Do not make Emma responsible for your feelings about Elena.”

Dorian looked at her.

“Agreed.”

Good.

Then he told me something.

Elena’s sealed letter to him had been opened.

With police present.

Did I want to know if it mentions Nora?

“Yes.”

It did.

He read only relevant section.

Dorian,

If Arthur returns the key, then I am dead or unable to finish what I should have done openly.

Good.

Then:

I found evidence that Moretti Domestic Services and Bellini Household Office used illegal debt deductions against employees.

I stopped new placements.

I repaid some people privately.

I did not report the full scheme.

There.

Accountability.

Then:

I told myself workers wanted money, not scandal.

I never asked enough of them.

Strong.

Then:

Nora Walsh refused my money until Victor corrected her record.

My throat closed.

Record.

What record?

She had been accused of theft?

Maybe.

Elena wrote:

Victor marked her as “dishonest staff” after she reported Mercer account.

That label followed her.

There.

Again reputational harm.

Then:

I persuaded him to remove it from Moretti placement registry.

I do not know whether Bellini records were corrected.

Likely not.

Then:

If Emma Walsh is ever in our household, it must not be because anyone arranged it.

Important.

So no Rosa-style manipulation.

Elena explicitly forbade.

Then:

If she arrives by ordinary hiring, do not burden her unless she asks.

Good.

Dorian stopped.

“You were hired through agency last year.”

“Yes.”

“No family intervention.”

Good.

No predestined placement.

Then he continued.

Nora asked one thing of me:

Do not make my daughter inherit my fight.

My eyes filled.

Mom.

Then final relevant line:

I failed Nora by keeping too much private.

Do not honor me by repeating that.

Dorian folded copy.

Silence.

Then Nadia asked:

“Where is full Moretti Domestic Services archive?”

Dorian said:

“Carriage safe is original core.”

“Digital?”

“Company dissolved before modern system.”

“Other boxes?”

Maybe legal storage.

Daniel searching.

Then financial audit.

Dorian authorized independent labor forensic review.

Not family office.

Good.

Then Vanessa.

Police charged? We need legal realism. Assault and unlawful restraint/attempted coercion. Hollis too.

She was released pending proceedings.

Dorian ended relationship immediately? They were fiancée? User doesn't explicitly say relationship status but Vanessa likely fiancée. We can say engagement ended.

He told Nadia:

“I ended engagement.”

Not relevant to case.

Fine.

Then Hollis.

Suspended/terminated.

He gave full statement.

I did not see him.

Good.

Then Victor Bellini.

He denied.

Through lawyer.

Claimed Nora’s deductions were clerical.

But his handwritten statement said otherwise.

He said statement taken under pressure from Elena.

Maybe.

Need corroboration.

Arthur’s supplemental ledger.

Where?

In envelope.

Vanessa had not destroyed.

Police found in her guest-room safe.

Great.

Ledger listed Mercer account inflows.

Worker deductions.

Outflows:

Bellini Household Office.

Moretti Domestic Services managers.

Cash withdrawals.

One line:

V. BELLINI — HOUSEHOLD DISCRETION.

There.

Victor.

Then one line:

A. MORETTI.

Dorian’s father Antonio.

Dorian stared when he learned.

So both families.

Not Bellini-only villain.

Good.

Antonio received money too.

Purpose?

“Referral fee.”

Illegal likely.

Dorian said:

“Of course.”

Then audit needed.

Then Nora’s file:

Employment contract showed debt amount $4,800.

She paid through deductions in eight months.

But deductions continued nineteen more months.

Total extra withheld:

$13,620 in 2002 dollars.

Significant.

Then complaint.

She wrote:

I paid what they said I owed.

Now they say I owe for keeping quiet.

My throat closed.

“Keeping quiet?”

What had she seen?

The Mercer account.

Also something else.

Nora’s statement:

Mr. Bellini gives envelopes to Mr. Moretti after payroll nights.

Victor and Antonio.

Cash sharing.

There.

Then one final note:

Nora refused to sign revised debt acknowledgment.

Household manager wrote:

Terminate and flag.

That flag followed her.

Maybe school cafeteria later paid less but stable.

Mom had told me she liked school because nobody checked silver.

Now I understood.

Then Nadia asked me:

“Do you want to pursue estate wage claim?”

“Yes.”

No martyr.

“Record correction?”

“Yes.”

“Public?”

I thought.

Mom had asked not to burden me.

But her record was hers.

Correct it.

“Yes.”

Then Dorian said:

“Moretti company no longer exists, but Moretti Holdings can fund its share.”

Nadia raised hand.

“We’ll calculate liability first.”

Good.

No guilt check.

Then Bellini side.

Victor’s lawyer argued statute limits.

Fraudulent concealment.

Maybe tolling.

Complex.

But public correction can happen regardless through current company records.

Then Arthur Vale asked to speak to me personally.

I said no.

Not yet.

Choice.

Then his hospice nurse sent message through Nadia:

He understands.

Good.

Then Daniel found old storage boxes from dissolved company in commercial records warehouse.

Forty-two employee files.

Not hundreds.

Maybe scheme smaller.

Better.

Workers from four households.

Moretti.

Bellini.

Conti.

Russo.

All wealthy families.

Debt deductions.

Some legitimate recruitment advances.

Some extended improperly.

Need precise.

Then one file had a red stamp:

CLEARED — E.M.

Elena intervened.

Some had checks showing repayment.

Others none.

Mixed.

Then Dorian asked independent worker advocates to join review.

Good.

No family-only interpretation.

Then one name:

HOLLIS GRANT.

I stared.

Hollis.

He had once been placed through same system.

Debt deductions.

Overcharged.

Elena cleared him.

That explained loyalty.

Maybe.

He had been victim.

Then became perpetrator against me.

Human.

Ugly.

Nadia said:

“Being harmed does not excuse harming you.”

Exactly.

Then Hollis’s statement confirmed.

Elena rescued him from debt arrangement.

He devoted life to family.

When Arthur returned, he panicked because he feared exposing Elena’s secrecy would destroy Dorian’s memory of her.

So he chose to silence me.

Protection language again.

Dorian looked sick.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

Voicemail.

A woman.

Older.

“Emma Walsh?”

“Yes?”

“I knew your mother.”

My heart stopped.

“My name is Grace Mercer.”

Mercer.

Same as account.

But it was supposed to be fictitious.

She continued:

“That account was named after me.”

Silence.

“I was the payroll clerk who created it.”

And suddenly the Mercer account was not only a fake vendor.

There was a real Grace Mercer.

May you like

Alive.

And she said she had kept copies for twenty-four years.
