Chapter 2 - THE MAN HOLDING SARAH’S LETTER

Daniel Mercer did not move.

Neither did Luca.

For three long seconds, I could hear the soft ticking of the clock on Sarah’s desk.

Then Caleb drew his weapon.

Lily gasped.

I pulled her against me.

“Put it away,” Luca said.

Caleb did not.

“Boss.”

“I said put it away.”

Caleb lowered the gun but did not holster it.

Daniel held Sarah’s letter between two fingers as though it had suddenly become dangerous to touch.

“I never saw this letter before tonight.”

Luca’s eyes were cold.

“You opened the drawer.”

“With the key Emma brought.”

“You knew the desk existed.”

“Everyone close to Sarah knew the desk existed.”

“You handled her estate.”

“I was your attorney.”

“You also handled her death certificate.”

Daniel flinched.

That told me Luca had struck something real.

Vanessa watched from the other side of the room, and for the first time since the music box opened, she looked almost relieved.

Daniel saw it.

“Do not enjoy this.”

“You’re the one Sarah warned him about.”

“No. The letter says the man who brings it.”

“You brought it out of the envelope.”

Daniel turned toward Luca.

“This is wordplay.”

“Sarah was precise.”

“So am I.”

Luca’s voice stayed level.

“Then prove it.”

Daniel placed the letter on the desk.

“Check everything.”

Luca looked at Caleb.

“You heard him.”

Caleb nodded.

“Phone. Wallet. office. house. vehicles. accounts.”

Daniel did not object.

I was surprised.

Vanessa was not.

She smiled faintly.

Daniel looked at me.

“Emma.”

“Yes?”

“Take Lily somewhere secure.”

Luca answered before I could.

“No one moves yet.”

I stared.

“Sir, she’s exhausted.”

His eyes softened when they reached his daughter.

“I know.”

Lily whispered, “I want Emma.”

That settled it.

Luca looked at Caleb.

“Lock the east corridor. Two men outside Lily’s room. Nobody enters without me, Emma, or Caleb.”

Daniel said, “Not me?”

Luca’s gaze returned to him.

“Not tonight.”

I took Lily upstairs.

Halfway down the hall, she stopped.

“Emma?”

“Yes?”

“Is Daddy mad at Uncle Daniel?”

“I think your dad is scared.”

She looked surprised.

“My dad isn’t scared.”

“Everyone is scared sometimes.”

“Even mafia bosses?”

I almost smiled.

“Especially people with something to lose.”

Lily thought about that.

“Is he scared because of me?”

“No.”

The answer came faster than thought.

“He’s scared for you.”

She seemed to understand the difference.

In her room, I cleaned the broken glass while Lily changed into pajamas.

The music box sat on the dresser.

I stared at it.

Sarah had hidden the key beneath a false panel.

But Sarah knew Lily would eventually play the lullaby.

Maybe there was more.

I picked it up.

The tune was simple.

Six repeated bars.

I turned the key.

Music played.

Lily came out of the bathroom.

“Mom sang it differently.”

I looked at her.

“How?”

“She stopped before the last part.”

“What last part?”

Lily hummed.

The melody continued three notes beyond what the music box played.

I examined the cylinder.

One section looked newer than the rest.

A metal pin had been removed.

“Do you have anything tiny? A needle?”

Lily opened her jewelry box and handed me a safety pin.

I pressed it into the empty hole.

Click.

A second compartment opened.

Inside was a strip of microcassette tape.

Lily stared.

“Is that Mom?”

“I don’t know.”

I called Luca.

He arrived in less than a minute.

Caleb followed.

Daniel did not.

Luca looked at my face again.

“You should have ice on that.”

“I found something.”

He sighed.

“Of course you did.”

We took the tape to Sarah’s old media room.

She had loved analog things.

Vinyl.

Film.

Cassette recorders.

Luca found an old microcassette player in a cabinet.

He inserted the tape.

Static.

Then Sarah’s voice.

Luca stopped breathing.

Lily grabbed his hand.

“Hi, my love,” Sarah said through the speaker.

Luca closed his eyes.

“If you found the second recording, then the desk has already been opened.”

Her voice was calm.

Too calm.

“I need you to listen before you decide who betrayed me.”

Static crackled.

“Daniel knows part of the truth. He does not know he knows it.”

Luca opened his eyes.

Caleb looked toward him.

Sarah continued.

“Three months before Lily was born, I learned Carlo Bellini might be my biological father. I did not tell Luca because I wanted proof before I brought Bellini blood into our home.”

Her laugh sounded sad.

“Luca has enough blood in his life already.”

Lily leaned against him.

“The test Vanessa stole confirmed it. Carlo created a private trust years ago for any legally proven descendants. The trust contains legitimate shipping shares, real estate, and voting rights worth hundreds of millions. Vanessa believed Sarah’s existence threatened her inheritance.”

Static.

“But Vanessa is not the person who altered Lily’s records.”

Luca’s jaw tightened.

“The alteration required access to our attorney files and our security schedule.”

Caleb looked at Luca.

Sarah continued.

“Daniel’s credentials were used.”

Silence.

“But I do not believe Daniel used them.”

Luca exhaled slowly.

“The man I fear copied Daniel’s access years ago.”

The tape hissed.

“His initials are R.M.”

Caleb swore.

Luca’s face became hard.

I asked, “Who is R.M.?”

He did not answer immediately.

Then he said, “Renato Moretti.”

“Your brother?”

“Cousin.”

Caleb added, “Raised with Luca. Runs west-side operations.”

Sarah’s voice continued.

“Renato arranged my security detail the night my car crashed.”

The room went dead quiet.

Luca’s face changed in a way I had never seen.

Not anger.

Something older.

Personal.

The tape ended with Sarah whispering:

“If anything happens to me, protect Lily from the Bellinis.”

A pause.

“And Luca—protect her from your own family too.”

The tape clicked off.

No one spoke.

Then footsteps sounded in the hallway.

Caleb moved toward the door.

One of the guards appeared.

“Boss.”

“What?”

“Renato’s downstairs.”

Luca looked at the clock.

“Why?”

“He says he heard there was a problem with Miss Bellini.”

Of course he did.

Luca looked at me.

“Stay with Lily.”

I nodded.

He started toward the door.

Then Lily ran after him.

“Daddy.”

He turned.

She held out Sarah’s music box.

“Take Mom.”

Luca stared.

Then accepted it.

He kissed Lily’s forehead.

When he left, I locked the door.

Ten minutes later, I heard shouting below.

Then a gunshot.

Lily jumped.

I pulled her behind me.

Another gunshot.

Footsteps ran through the corridor.

Someone hit the bedroom door from the outside.

Once.

Twice.

Then a man’s voice whispered through the wood.

“Emma.”

I knew that voice.

Daniel.

“Open the door.”

I didn’t move.

“Emma. Luca’s been shot.”

Lily made a sound.

My hand went to the lock.

Then I remembered Sarah’s first letter.

Do not trust the man who brings you this letter.

And her second recording.

Daniel knows part of the truth. He does not know he knows it.

I stepped back.

“Where’s Caleb?”

Silence.

Daniel said, “Open the door.”

“No.”

“Emma.”

“Tell me where Caleb is.”

Another silence.

Then the voice changed.

Not Daniel.

A man imitating him.

Poorly.

“Open the door.”

Lily clutched my arm.

I backed toward the window.

The door handle turned.

Someone had a key.

And downstairs, another gunshot exploded through Luca Moretti’s engagement party.

Before Luca went downstairs to confront Renato, Caleb returned with the first results from Daniel’s device audit.

“There’s something you should see.”

Daniel looked tired rather than frightened.

Caleb placed a tablet on the desk.

“Your credentials accessed St. Vincent’s legal archive six years ago.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“I represented Luca.”

“Not at 3:14 a.m. on the night Lily’s records were altered.”

Daniel stared.

“That wasn’t me.”

Caleb swiped to another page.

“The login originated from a Moretti guest office.”

Luca looked at him.

“Which guest office?”

“The west study.”

Everyone knew who had used that room whenever he stayed at the estate.

Renato.

Daniel let out a breath.

Sarah had been right.

His identity had been used, but he had not known it.

Luca did not apologize.

Not yet.

He asked, “Could Renato access Daniel’s token?”

Daniel answered himself.

“At your father’s memorial.”

Luca looked at him.

Daniel explained.

“Three months before Lily was born, we hosted the memorial foundation dinner here. I worked from the west study. My authentication token disappeared for twenty minutes.”

“You reported it?”

“To Renato.”

The room became still.

“He said a waiter found it under the desk.”

Caleb’s expression darkened.

Daniel laughed without humor.

“I handed the theft report to the thief.”

I looked at Sarah’s letter.

Daniel knows part of the truth. He does not know he knows it.

Sarah had understood exactly what happened.

Maybe not everything.

Enough.

Luca finally looked at Daniel.

“I was wrong about you.”

Daniel raised an eyebrow.

“That sounded painful.”

“It was.”

“You should practice.”

I almost smiled.

Then Daniel’s face became serious.

“You should still investigate me.”

Luca frowned.

“Why?”

“Because Sarah wanted you to distrust convenience. Clearing me because we found one explanation would be another convenience.”

That surprised me.

Daniel looked at Lily’s bedroom door.

“If someone used me once, they may have used me more than once.”

Luca nodded.

“Caleb?”

“Full audit continues.”

Daniel accepted that without complaint.

Before he left for the medical room, he stopped beside me.

“You did the right thing not opening the door.”

“I almost did.”

“But you didn’t.”

He looked toward Lily.

“Sometimes protecting someone is one second of hesitation.”

Then he walked away.

I understood why Luca trusted him.

May you like

Not because Daniel never made mistakes.

Because when doubt came, he did not demand immunity from it.
