Chapter 1 - THE KEY INSIDE THE MUSIC BOX

The music box wasn’t worth much money.

Vanessa hated it anyway.

My name is Emma Collins.

Twenty-eight.

Housemaid.

I stood beside Luca Moretti’s engagement table holding an old wooden music box against my chest.

My uniform was crooked and disheveled.

My left eye was swollen purple.

A shallow slash-like cut ran along the right side of my neck, leaving a narrow blood stain down my collar.

My hands were trembling.

Beside me, nine-year-old Lily was crying silently.

Vanessa Bellini stood across from us wearing a luxurious emerald-green gown.

“Put it in the trash.”

I shook my head.

“It belongs to Lily.”

“It belonged to Sarah.”

Lily flinched at her mother’s name.

Then Luca Moretti turned from across the ballroom.

Thirty-three.

Extremely handsome.

Broad athletic shoulders.

Piercing blue-gray eyes.

Dark curly hair, thick and carefully styled.

Short beard.

Tonight he wore a tailored charcoal-gray suit with a black shirt.

He saw my injuries immediately.

“Emma.”

“Yes, sir?”

“Who hurt you?”

Vanessa answered.

“She slipped in Lily’s room.”

Luca slowly looked toward her.

“I asked Emma.”

Silence.

He walked closer.

“What happened?”

I swallowed.

“I found Vanessa with this.”

I held up the music box.

Vanessa’s face tightened.

“It’s junk.”

Lily whispered, “Mom gave it to me.”

Luca looked at his daughter.

“What happened?”

“She said I couldn’t keep Mom’s things after the wedding.”

Luca became very still.

Vanessa said, “I was trying to help her let go.”

Luca’s eyes moved back to me.

“And your injuries?”

“She tried to take the box.”

“I held onto it.”

“She pushed me into the dresser.”

I touched my bruised eye.

“The drawer corner hit my face.”

“And the cut?”

“The broken picture frame caught my neck.”

Vanessa folded her arms.

“She’s exaggerating.”

Then Lily reached for the music box.

“Daddy.”

“There’s a song Mom recorded inside.”

She turned the tiny key.

A lullaby began.

Luca’s expression softened.

Then—

click.

Something dropped from a hidden slot underneath.

A brass key.

It landed on the table.

Vanessa went pale.

Luca noticed.

He picked it up.

Stamped into the metal:

SARAH — DESK B

“What is this?”

Lily looked confused.

I whispered, “Vanessa knew.”

Luca looked toward me.

“How?”

“When the key fell out upstairs, she tried to take it.”

Vanessa snapped, “That proves nothing.”

Luca turned the key over.

A second engraving:

LILY’S DOCUMENTS

His expression hardened.

Twenty minutes later, Daniel Mercer, Luca’s attorney and oldest friend, opened the locked bottom drawer of Sarah’s old desk.

Inside lay Lily’s birth certificate.

A sealed envelope.

And a photograph of Vanessa standing beside Sarah in a hospital room six years before Vanessa claimed they had ever met.

Luca stared.

Then looked at his fiancée.

“You knew my wife.”

For the first time since I had begun working in Luca Moretti’s home, I watched him forget how to hide what he felt.

His face did not change much.

That was what made it frightening.

Luca stood behind Sarah’s old desk with the photograph in one hand and Lily’s birth certificate in the other. Daniel remained beside the open drawer. Lily stood near me, fingers curled around the hem of my sleeve.

Vanessa was near the door.

She had lost all color.

“I met her once.”

Daniel lifted the photograph.

“Once?”

Sarah was lying in a hospital bed, pale and exhausted but smiling. A newborn wrapped in pink rested against her chest.

Lily.

Vanessa stood beside the bed wearing blue scrubs.

A badge hung from her collar.

The name was partly visible.

V. BELLINI.

Vanessa followed my gaze.

“My family donated to the maternity wing.”

Luca’s eyes did not leave her.

“You told me you met Sarah at a charity luncheon.”

“I forgot.”

“You forgot meeting my wife on the day my daughter was born?”

“It was six years ago.”

Lily whispered, “Daddy?”

Luca lowered the photograph immediately.

“Yes, piccola?”

“Was Vanessa there when I was a baby?”

His jaw tightened.

“It looks that way.”

Vanessa exhaled sharply.

“This is ridiculous. You are frightening her over an old photograph.”

I crouched beside Lily despite the pain in my face.

“Do you want to sit in the reading chair?”

She shook her head.

“If I leave, she’ll throw Mom’s things away.”

Every adult in the room heard it.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s expression hardened.

“She sleeps with Sarah’s sweater under her pillow. She talks to photographs. I was trying to help her move on.”

“She is nine,” I said.

Vanessa turned on me.

“You do not speak to me like that.”

“Emma can speak,” Luca said.

The room went silent.

Vanessa stared at him.

“You are taking a servant’s side?”

“No.”

He looked at Lily.

“I am taking my daughter’s.”

Luca reached for the sealed envelope.

Vanessa moved.

Only half a step.

Daniel noticed.

So did I.

So did Luca.

Across the front, in Sarah’s handwriting, were five words.

FOR LUCA. ONLY IF NECESSARY.

Vanessa whispered, “You shouldn’t open that here.”

I looked at her.

“Why?”

“This is family business.”

Luca tore the envelope open.

Inside were three sheets of paper.

The first was a letter.

The second was a photocopy of a hospital laboratory report.

The third was a notarized affidavit.

Luca read the first line.

Then sat down.

I had never seen Luca Moretti sit because a sentence required it.

Daniel moved closer.

“Luca?”

He handed him the letter.

Daniel read silently.

His face changed.

“What?” I asked before I could stop myself.

Luca looked toward Lily.

“Take her downstairs.”

“No,” Lily said.

“Piccola.”

“No. It’s about me.”

He stared at her for a long moment.

Then nodded.

“You’re right.”

Vanessa looked horrified.

“She is a child.”

“She is the person everyone keeps making decisions about.”

Daniel began to read Sarah’s letter aloud.

“Luca, if you are reading this, then either I found the courage to tell you myself or something happened before I could.”

Luca’s hand tightened.

“Keep going.”

“Six years ago, after Lily was born, a woman entered my recovery room and said there had been a mistake with the newborn screening. She told me Lily needed another blood test.”

I looked at Vanessa.

She stared at the floor.

“I later learned no additional test had been ordered. The woman used a false name. I saw her again two years later at a Bellini Foundation event.”

Lily’s hand tightened around mine.

Daniel continued.

“She introduced herself as Vanessa Bellini.”

Vanessa suddenly moved toward the door.

Caleb Russo, Luca’s head of security, appeared before she reached it.

Luca had not called him.

He had apparently heard enough from the hallway.

Vanessa stopped.

“This is insane.”

Daniel ignored her.

“After that event, I began checking Lily’s hospital records. Several pages from the original birth file were missing. I requested certified copies through counsel. The hospital claimed the originals had been damaged during a server migration.”

Luca said, “What test?”

Vanessa shook her head.

“I don’t know.”

“You were there.”

“I told you. My family supported the hospital.”

“You used a false name to enter Sarah’s room.”

“I did not.”

Daniel lifted the affidavit.

“This statement is from a nurse named Margaret Keene.”

Vanessa’s face changed again.

Recognition.

Fear.

Luca saw it.

“Who is she?”

Vanessa said nothing.

Daniel read.

Margaret Keene had worked in the maternity ward at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

She swore that on the day Lily was born, she saw Vanessa Bellini remove a blood sample from the neonatal laboratory and hand it to a man in a dark suit.

Lily whispered, “Why?”

No one answered.

I wanted to kneel beside her and say adults always had good reasons.

But that would have been a lie.

Daniel opened the laboratory report.

“Luca.”

“What?”

“This isn’t a newborn screening.”

He turned the page.

At the top were two words.

KINSHIP ANALYSIS.

Luca stared.

“Whose?”

Daniel looked at Vanessa.

“Sarah Moretti and Lily Moretti compared against an unidentified male reference sample.”

Luca stood.

“What was the result?”

Daniel read.

“Probability of first-degree biological relationship between Sarah Moretti and the male reference subject: 99.84 percent.”

I frowned.

“That doesn’t make sense.”

“It means the unidentified man was almost certainly Sarah’s father,” Daniel said.

Luca looked at Vanessa.

Vanessa’s eyes filled with something colder than panic.

Resignation.

Luca said, “Who was the male?”

She remained silent.

Daniel checked the final page.

There, beneath the lab code, was a handwritten notation in Sarah’s writing.

C.B.

Luca’s face hardened.

“Carlo Bellini.”

Vanessa’s father.

Lily looked from Vanessa to Luca.

“Does that mean—”

I squeezed her hand.

Vanessa closed her eyes.

Luca finished the sentence for everyone.

“Sarah was Carlo Bellini’s daughter.”

Silence swallowed the room.

Vanessa and Sarah.

Half-sisters.

Lily’s mother had been a Bellini by blood.

And Lily was Carlo Bellini’s granddaughter.

Vanessa whispered, “You don’t understand.”

Luca stepped toward her.

“Then explain.”

“My father had an affair before he married my mother.”

“With Sarah’s mother?”

“Yes.”

“Did Sarah know?”

“Not until later.”

“Did you?”

Vanessa’s eyes moved toward the letter.

“I found out before she did.”

Luca’s voice dropped.

“Why steal Lily’s blood?”

Vanessa looked at Lily.

Something almost like shame touched her face.

“Because my father wanted proof.”

“Proof of what?”

“That Sarah was really his.”

Daniel frowned.

“Sarah’s blood would have been enough.”

“Not for the trust.”

Luca went completely still.

“What trust?”

Vanessa realized she had said too much.

Daniel moved closer.

“What trust, Vanessa?”

She backed toward the desk.

“Ask my father.”

Luca’s phone was already in his hand.

Vanessa lunged.

Not toward him.

Toward Sarah’s letter.

I reacted before thinking.

I caught her wrist.

Pain shot through my bruised face as she shoved me.

Luca was there instantly.

He pulled Vanessa away.

Caleb stepped between us.

Lily started crying.

Luca’s anger changed direction immediately.

He knelt before his daughter.

“Hey. Look at me.”

She did.

“You are safe.”

“Is Vanessa my aunt?”

His expression tightened.

“Yes.”

“Did she hurt Mom?”

The question stopped every adult.

Vanessa whispered, “No.”

Lily looked at her.

“You hurt Emma.”

Vanessa had no answer.

Daniel turned over the last page of Sarah’s letter.

“There’s more.”

Luca stood slowly.

Daniel read.

“If Carlo learns Lily carries the Bellini bloodline, he may try to use her inheritance rights. If Vanessa learns where I hid the evidence, she may try to destroy it. But Luca, there is one person I fear more than either of them.”

Luca’s face changed.

Daniel kept reading.

“The person who helped the Bellinis alter Lily’s records works inside your house.”

I felt Lily’s hand go cold in mine.

Luca looked toward Caleb.

Caleb looked toward Daniel.

Then toward the closed study door.

The estate was full of guards, staff, relatives, and guests celebrating Luca’s engagement.

Someone among them had helped erase Lily’s history.

And Sarah had known it before she died.

Daniel read the final sentence.

“Do not trust the man who brings you this letter if I am already dead.”

May you like

The room froze.

Because Daniel was the man holding it.
