Chapter 9

Fifteen years after Final Night, Lily was twenty-one.
College.
Information policy.
Not cybersecurity celebrity work.
Her choice.
Michael remained Dad.
Claire remained Mom.
Luca remained Luca.
Sometimes Uncle Luca if she wanted to annoy him.
I remained Em.
Perfect.
Then she requested access to sealed case records.
Adult now.
Her records too.
Court granted supervised review.
She read:
Final Night schedule.
Claire confinement evidence.
Vanessa’s messages.
Kent’s notes.
my statement.
her own child interview.
Two days.
Then she came home exhausted.
“No new secrets?” I asked.
“No.”
Good.
No twist waiting for adulthood.
Then:
“I sounded so little.”
Claire hugged her.
“You were.”
Then Lily asked Luca:
“Why did you keep seeing me after you learned you weren’t my dad?”
He looked surprised.
“Because you were six.”
“That’s not an answer.”
He smiled.
Then:
“Because I cared what happened to you.”
“Why?”
He thought.
“Because you trusted me at a moment when you shouldn’t have had to trust anyone.”
True.
Then:
“Did you wish I was your daughter?”
Long pause.
“Sometimes.”
Honest.
Lily nodded.
Then:
“I’m glad you didn’t act like I was.”
Good.
Care without claim.
Then Michael read parts of the case with Lily.
He cried at the footage descriptions.
Not because synthetic Luca.
Because another man had been assigned his role while he was absent from her life.
He said:
“I should have been there more.”
Lily answered:
“Yes.”
No comforting lie.
Then:
“But this still wasn’t your fault.”
Both.
Then my company.
I sold minority ownership to two senior partners.
No Luca involvement.
Independent counsel.
Clear voting rights.
One partner asked why our synthetic-consent policy had so many revocation steps.
“Because yes should not become permanent just because technology can preserve it.”
Good.
Then one client used an actor’s voice outside agreed territory.
We enforced termination.
No scandal.
Just contract.
Systems working.
Then Luca.
Partially retired.
Hated it.
Called everyone too often.
Board told him:
“Stop.”
He called me offended.
I laughed.
Good.
Then Lily wrote a college paper.
Topic:
institutional trust in synthetic media.
No family story.
Academic.
She cited public cases.
Not herself.
Her trauma did not need to become coursework.
Then a reporter recognized her.
“Are you the child in the Moretti deepfake case?”
Lily answered:
“I’m here to discuss platform authentication.”
Then walked away.
Good.
No denial.
No surrender.
Then Claire and Lily passed through Green Bay.
They stopped at the library.
Not pilgrimage.
Convenience.
Claire laughed.
“Worst computer I ever used.”
Lily said:
“Saved your life.”
“Maybe.”
Then:
“Still terrible keyboard.”
Good.
Memory became ordinary.
Then family dinner.
Cake.
Luca checked it.
Lily said:
“You are never going to recover.”
He answered:
“I recovered from kidnapping conspiracy. Cake is different.”
Everyone laughed.
Then she put no note anywhere.
That was the joke.
Later Lily asked me:
“Why did you protect me?”
I thought.
“Because you were hurt.”
“That’s it?”
“Yes.”
Sometimes morality is not complicated.
A child was bruised.
An adult moved closer.
That was enough.
Then Lily read my original statement.
“You sounded scared.”
“I was.”
No need to transform fear into bravery afterward.
Then my succession plan at work included synthetic-identity permissions for executives.
No successor could assume access to a predecessor’s voice model.
Authority expired when role expired.
Simple.
Hard-earned.
Good.
At twenty-one, Lily finally asked Michael whether he resented Luca.
Michael answered:
“Sometimes.”
Then:
“Mostly I resent the years I missed.”
Honest.
Lily said:
“Those aren’t the same.”
“No.”
Good.
No one had to pretend jealousy vanished.
They only had to stop letting jealousy dictate behavior.
Then Lily and Luca went to lunch.
No security drama.
No special room.
She told him about a class.
He complained about parking.
Family had become boring enough to survive.
