Chapter 6

Two years after Final Night failed, Luca proposed to me.

At my apartment.

No hidden cameras.

No cake.

No child in the room.

He held the ring plainly.

“Marry me.”

I stared.

Then:

“Independent prenup.”

“Yes.”

“My work stays mine.”

“Yes.”

“No automatic role in Lily’s family.”

“Yes.”

“No security surveillance of my clients without consent.”

“Yes.”

“No synthetic version of me after I die.”

He blinked.

Then laughed.

“That specific?”

“Very.”

“Agreed.”

I said yes.

The prenup took weeks.

Separate lawyers.

One clause addressed synthetic identity rights.

Neither spouse could authorize:

voice cloning.

facial model training.

digital replicas.

posthumous synthetic use.

Without explicit written consent.

That sounded futuristic.

After our lives, it felt basic.

Then wedding.

Small.

Claire attended.

Lily attended.

Michael came too.

He sat near Lily but did not make the day about his return.

Good.

Lily asked Luca:

“Can I call you Daddy for the wedding?”

He looked stunned.

“Why?”

“Because it’s funny.”

He laughed.

“Your choice.”

She did once.

Then returned to Luca.

No title ownership.

Then marriage.

Not magic.

First big argument:

my company discovered a vendor had used my recorded conference presentation to train a synthetic voice demo.

Without consent.

I was furious.

Luca wanted to send Moretti counsel.

“No.”

“They stole your voice.”

“My company has lawyers.”

“Emily—”

“Luca.”

He stopped.

Good.

My counsel handled it.

Vendor deleted the model.

paid settlement.

changed policy.

No billionaire intervention.

Then household policy.

No family member could authorize synthetic likeness of employees for security training without consent.

That became a rule too.

Then Lily.

Eight now.

Back in school.

Still occasionally distrustful of video.

She created code words with Claire and Michael.

With Luca:

blue dinosaur.

With me:

burnt toast.

No reason.

Good.

Then one day she forgot Luca’s code word.

Panicked.

Therapist helped retire the system gradually.

Safety tools can become anxiety tools if never updated.

Good.

Then Michael improved.

Quarterly visits became monthly.

Then school events.

He did not move back to Chicago.

No perfect ending.

But he showed up.

Lily called him Dad sometimes.

Sometimes Michael.

Luca stayed Luca.

Then Claire.

She testified against Kent and Vanessa.

Afterward she quit post-production for a year.

Then returned.

Documentary editing.

Her choice.

Technology did not own her.

Then my work.

I became director of synthetic-media consent.

We built:

actor consent matrices.

expiration dates.

reuse restrictions.

model deletion requirements.

watermarking.

I liked turning fear into process.

One client said:

“Consent slows production.”

I answered:

“So does litigation.”

He laughed.

Then:

“Seriously.”

Good.

Then Vanessa sent Lily a letter from prison.

Child therapist held it.

Lily did not want it.

Not yet.

Good.

Then Luca visited Vanessa once.

Closure.

He told me before.

I did not ask to come.

He returned quiet.

“What did she say?”

“She said she was sorry.”

“Do you believe her?”

“Yes.”

Then:

“Does it fix anything?”

“No.”

Both.

Good.

Then the fake study set.

Evidence released.

Luca chose professional destruction.

Replica photographs shredded.

Prosthetics destroyed.

Synthetic files retained only under legal archive.

No museum.

Then one thing remained.

The printed photograph from Lily’s blue disc case.

Claire.

Little Lily.

Synthetic Luca.

Lily asked to keep it.

Claire hesitated.

“Why?”

“Because that happened to me.”

Good.

Ownership of story.

She kept one print.

The disc remained sealed.

Then one evening Luca looked at the photo.

“Fake me looks terrible.”

Lily laughed.

“Real you too.”

Good.

The image lost power.

At our wedding, the catering captain once asked Luca if he wanted the timeline changed.

He looked at me.

Then answered:

“Ask Emily. She approved it.”

That small correction made me smile.

Marriage had not turned his preference into my authority or mine into his.

The prenup was paper.

The habit was the real protection.

Later, when the vendor deleted my unauthorized voice model, the company sent a certificate of deletion.

I kept it for legal records.

Not framed.

Not symbolic.

Just proof that revocation had consequence.

That mattered.

Lily’s code-word system eventually shrank to one family phrase used only during unusual calls.

Then even that disappeared.

Safety should restore ordinary life.

Not replace it with permanent vigilance.

The synthetic-rights clause in the prenup seemed excessive to Luca’s lawyer until Emily asked one question:

“If I die, can his company use my conference recordings to make me endorse something?”

Silence.

Clause stayed.

Good.

The same lawyer later added similar language to other high-profile clients’ planning documents.

Sometimes personal harm reveals a general gap.

Then at home, Lily asked why adults needed a contract to promise not to fake each other.

Emily answered:

“Because love and law do different jobs.”

Lily thought.

“Law sounds annoying.”

“Yes.”

“Useful?”

“Yes.”

Good.
