Chapter 6

Five years after the sewing box opened, the successor hospital invited Luca to a closed patient-safety review.
Not a gala.
Not a press event.
A review.
They had studied the Lucia Moretti case as a historical failure involving:
premature death notification.
record correction.
family communication.
conflicted settlement handling.
Luca agreed on one condition.
No audio from Lucia’s declarations.
Good.
They used:
timeline.
redacted records.
institutional decisions.
The lesson was not:
never notify death until absolute certainty.
Medicine has procedures.
The lesson was:
when a critical fact changes, systems must force correction outward.
Then one safety officer said:
“Our current record system automatically cancels death status after documented return of circulation.”
Good.
Technology helping.
Then:
family notification correction now requires named responsible clinician.
Good.
Then:
memorial services are not hospital responsibility.
Obviously.
Still.
Then Luca asked:
“What would happen today?”
The officer answered:
family recalled immediately.
record corrected.
ethics consult if family resists.
patient advocate assigned once capacity emerges.
Better.
Not perfect.
Then my studio.
We received a county archive contract.
Thousands of records.
Boring.
Amazing.
No hidden secrets.
Mostly:
permits.
tax rolls.
maps.
I loved it.
Then one technician complained:
“Nothing interesting.”
I said:
“That’s a good week.”
Good.
Then Luca’s family office.
One-word instructions had almost disappeared.
His chief of staff showed me an email:
REVIEW ONLY. DO NOT ACT. RETURN OPTIONS.
I laughed.
“Growth.”
“Painful,” Luca said.
Good.
Then one employee still acted without confirmation.
Why?
Old habit.
They retrained.
No firing.
Good.
Then Lucia’s remaining funds.
The scholarship program sent annual reports.
Luca never attended ceremonies.
One scholarship recipient later became a rehabilitation nurse.
No cosmic connection.
Good.
Then patient-rights legal aid used funds for:
communication disputes.
capacity hearings.
medical record corrections.
Again:
not branded.
Then one case in the report involved a family member being falsely told a parent lacked capacity.
Luca stopped reading.
Too close.
Then resumed later.
Good.
Then my marriage.
We had no children? Keep perhaps no mention. Good.
We traveled.
Florence.
Montreal.
Savannah.
Normal.
Then one trip, hotel placed a sewing kit in room.
Luca held it up.
“Dangerous.”
I stared.
“Stop.”
He laughed.
Good.
Humor now possible.
Then Arthur Bell died.
Natural causes.
Before death, he had completed restricted oral history.
Archive asked Luca whether to shorten restriction.
“No.”
Good.
No rush to expose.
Then Victor Bellini’s old memo became eligible for legal release in an institutional review.
Luca chose not to publish.
Why?
Already enough public record.
Good.
Then Vanessa’s probation ended.
No contact.
One mutual acquaintance said she moved to Boston.
Luca:
“Okay.”
No monitoring.
Good.
Then one day she wrote to me.
Through counsel.
One page.
I read.
She said:
I thought the papers would destroy him.
Then:
I was wrong to decide that gave me the right to destroy the papers first.
Good.
Then:
I am sorry I hurt you.
No request for answer.
I did not reply.
Fine.
Then I told Luca:
“She wrote.”
“Do you want me to read it?”
“No.”
He nodded.
Privacy.
Then one evening at the studio, a client wanted to destroy a restored diary after reading it.
Could they?
Yes.
Their property.
Nora said:
“Our job is not to save every object from its owner.”
That unsettled me.
Then I understood.
Preservation is not control either.
Good.
We gave the diary back.
Client destroyed it.
I disliked it.
Still their choice.
That lesson was harder than refusing alteration.
Then I told Luca.
He said:
“Seems wrong.”
“Maybe.”
Then:
“Still theirs.”
He nodded.
Good.
Choice remains uncomfortable when we dislike the result.
Then five-year anniversary of our marriage.
I gave Luca nothing archival.
He gave me new studio gloves.
Romantic enough.
Then we ate sea bass.
No documents.
Good.
The past remained preserved in proper places.
Not everywhere.
That was healthier.
The hospital safety review later added one line Emma liked:
CORRECTION MUST TRAVEL AS FAR AS THE ERROR.
If a wrong death status reached family, billing, records, and funeral services, the correction could not remain inside one chart.
Good.
Information failures require outward repair.
