Chapter 10

Twenty-five years after I carried Lucia Moretti’s sewing box into a formal dinner, I sat at our kitchen table repairing a loose hem.
My own.
Nothing historical.
Nothing valuable.
Just a dress.
Luca walked in.
Gray at the temples.
beard mostly silver.
blue eyes still sharp.
tattoos softened by age.
He looked at the sewing box beside me.
Not Lucia’s.
Cheap modern wood.
He stopped.
“Anything underneath?”
I stared.
“Get out.”
He laughed.
Good.
Then dinner.
Sea bass.
Again.
We had come full circle enough times that it no longer felt clever.
He wore no burgundy suit.
I wore no uniform.
Then our niece Sofia arrived with her daughter.
Family dinner.
Simple.
The child saw the sewing box.
“What’s that?”
“Thread.”
“Any secrets?”
Luca nearly choked.
I stared at Sofia.
She raised her hands.
“Family lore.”
Of course.
Then the child asked:
“Was Great-Grandma Lucia really dead twice?”
No.
Important.
Luca answered carefully.
“She was reported dead before she actually died.”
The child frowned.
“How?”
“A terrible mistake was followed by worse decisions.”
Good.
Then:
“Was she alive when you thought she was dead?”
“Yes.”
“How long?”
“Almost three years.”
The child’s eyes widened.
Then:
“Why didn’t she call?”
Luca looked down.
I let him answer.
“She tried.”
Silence.
Then:
“Did you get mad?”
“Yes.”
“Forever?”
He thought.
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Did you hate your dad?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Hard.
Then Luca said:
“Because I loved him too.”
The child frowned harder.
Adults are inconvenient.
Then:
“He did something very wrong.”
“Yes.”
“Can you love someone who does something wrong?”
“Yes.”
Simple.
Then the child lost interest.
Asked for dessert.
Good.
No child should carry the entire architecture of adult betrayal through cake.
Then after dinner, Sofia asked:
“What happened to Lucia’s money?”
Luca said:
“Some came to me. Some funded things she cared about.”
No numbers.
No need.
Then:
“What about the tapes?”
“Archived.”
“Public?”
“No.”
Good.
Then:
“Will they ever be?”
“Maybe not.”
Privacy.
Then we talked about other things.
School.
travel.
weather.
Then everyone left.
Luca cleaned.
Badly.
I dried.
Then:
“You know what I remember?”
“The box?”
“No.”
“Vanessa?”
“No.”
“My torn uniform?”
His face changed.
“Yes.”
I looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because you kept apologizing.”
I had forgotten that.
“You said sorry because the plate fell.”
Maybe.
Then:
“You were bleeding.”
Silence.
Then:
“And I remember thinking the house had taught you the dinner mattered more.”
He looked down.
“I’m sorry.”
Not for Vanessa alone.
For the house.
Good.
Then I asked:
“What do you remember about your mother?”
He smiled.
Not the tapes.
Not St. Catherine’s.
“She hated pears.”
I laughed.
“What?”
“She would buy them and never eat them.”
Then:
“She sang badly.”
Good.
Then:
“She corrected everyone’s grammar and got her own wrong.”
There.
Real memory.
Then:
“Do you remember her voice?”
“Yes.”
Good.
No longer only the legal declarations.
Then Luca opened a drawer.
Pulled out a recipe card.
Lucia’s.
TOMATO SAUCE.
One corner stained.
No hidden writing.
He said:
“This is my favorite archive.”
I smiled.
Fair.
Then the official records.
Where were they?
Hospital archive.
family archive.
court file.
restricted storage.
Where they belonged.
The false certificate still existed as evidence.
The corrected certificate existed as truth.
Neither controlled our kitchen.
Then Vanessa.
Dead.
No last clue.
Carlo.
Dead.
No final confession.
Arthur.
Raymond.
Victor.
Gone.
No new secrets waiting for us.
Good.
The story had enough.
Then my studio.
Mostly run by younger people.
One partner sent me a photo of a newly restored sewing box.
Caption:
NOTHING UNDER LINING.
I laughed.
Luca asked:
“What?”
“Work joke.”
Then:
“Terrible.”
“Yes.”
Good.
Then I finished my hem.
Closed the box.
No paper corner.
No certificate.
No matchbook.
Just thread.
Then Luca asked:
“Do you regret opening hers?”
“I didn’t.”
He frowned.
“Right.”
“The lining was already torn.”
Then:
“Do you regret taking it?”
“No.”
Then:
“Do you regret getting hurt?”
“Yes.”
Immediate.
Good.
Pain did not become noble because truth followed it.
Then he asked:
“Do you regret telling me?”
“No.”
Also immediate.
Then:
“Do you wish you had known?”
“At sixteen?”
“Yes.”
He did not even pause.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Even if it would have destroyed how you saw your father?”
“Yes.”
“Even if Lucia looked different?”
“Yes.”
Then:
“Why?”
He looked at me.
“Because it was my life too.”
There.
That was the ending.
Not revenge.
Not money.
Not a perfect family record.
Choice.
The right to know enough truth to make decisions about your own relationships.
Lucia had asked for that.
Carlo had taken it.
Vanessa had tried to keep taking it years later.
And once the box opened, no one could close that choice again.
Luca turned off the kitchen light.
I carried the sewing box upstairs.
Nothing hidden inside.
Nothing needed to be.
That was enough.
Before bed, Emma opened the modern sewing box once more.
Needle.
thread.
small scissors.
nothing else.
She closed it.
The ordinary interior felt almost luxurious.
