Chapter 5

Gavin’s mother called Dana Price.
“He came by this morning.”
Where?
Her house.
Why?
“To say goodbye.”
He took one box.
Samuel Ross’s old company seal and keys.
She told Price the location that mattered most.
Ross Transport’s first garage.
An abandoned industrial lot near Calumet River.
Federal agents went.
No Luca.
No Emma.
Good.
Gavin was there.
Alone.
No hostage.
No shootout.
He sat in the old office beneath a faded ROSS TRANSPORT sign.
Agents surrounded the property.
He refused to come out for nearly two hours.
Then he surrendered.
Alive.
That mattered.
Dead men cannot explain code.
Cannot identify partners.
Cannot be cross-examined.
In interview with counsel, Gavin admitted the sabotage.
Did he intend Luca to die?
At first he avoided the word.
Then:
“Yes.”
There.
He admitted geofence programming.
Camera installation.
Proxy insertion.
Vault fire.
Edited Vanessa confession.
He admitted the burner phone was left accidentally.
One mistake.
Then another.
He had not left the elevator warning envelope.
That was Marco.
Marco confessed separately.
He found evidence of the brake sabotage before Price arrived.
Saw his own credentials in logs.
Panicked.
Used the cloned elevator route to leave an anonymous warning because he feared Luca would suspect him.
Luca was furious.
Marco accepted it.
His intentions had been protective.
His secrecy still complicated the investigation.
Both true.
Then Gavin’s storage unit.
Old Ross records.
Cash.
Passport.
A rifle never used in the case.
Sedative.
Board-retreat map.
And one letter from Samuel Ross to Gavin.
Never mailed.
Son—
Do not spend your life blaming Moretti for every choice I made.
The room went silent when Price read it.
Samuel wrote that Bellini pressure had hurt his company.
Moretti had benefited.
But he had overleveraged before the acquisition.
Refused Carlo’s smaller rescue contract out of pride.
Then:
What they did was wrong. That does not make every consequence theirs.
Gavin had carried the letter.
Read it.
Still chose murder.
Grief was not ignorance.
It was not innocence either.
Then charges.
Gavin:
attempted murder,
vehicle sabotage,
cyber intrusion,
fraud,
conspiracy.
Vanessa:
fraud conspiracy,
assault on Emma,
unauthorized access,
obstruction.
Celeste:
financial conspiracy,
fraud.
Anthony:
board-governance conspiracy pending evidence.
Raymond Hale:
vehicle tampering, with cooperation considered.
Marco:
no sabotage charge, but independent security review for failure to report credential compromise and anonymous evidence handling.
Separate responsibility.
Good.
Then Luca opened the old River acquisition files to regulators and Ross family counsel.
His lawyers hated the timing.
Price said do it through structured preservation first.
He did.
Not reckless disclosure.
Not private settlement.
Historical review showed nine small operators had faced similar creditor pressure tied to Bellini financing and Moretti expansion.
Nine.
Samuel had not been alone.
Restitution became a company process.
Not Luca’s personal charity.
Then Vanessa asked to speak to me.
I said no.
Three weeks later I changed my mind.
Not forgiveness.
One answer.
We met in a controlled interview room.
I asked:
“Why did you say I had a boyfriend?”
She blinked.
Of everything.
That.
Then she answered.
“When Luca found you crying, I needed a reason that made your fear private.”
Private.
Irrelevant.
Romantic drama.
Something a powerful man might dismiss.
I stared at her.
“So you invented a man to make my bruises normal.”
“Yes.”
That made me angrier than I expected.
Then:
“Why hit me?”
“You had the recording.”
“That isn’t the whole answer.”
She looked down.
“I was scared, and I thought you were easier to control than Luca.”
There.
Truth.
I nodded.
“Okay.”
Not absolution.
Just understanding.
She said:
“I’m sorry.”
“Good.”
I stood.
Left.
Enough.
Then Luca asked if I wanted to return to work after medical leave.
“No.”
He nodded immediately.
No persuasion.
No guilt.
Good.
I moved in with my sister for a while.
Applied elsewhere.
A hotel group with no Moretti ownership hired me as operations coordinator.
Scheduling.
Vendors.
Guest problems.
Normal.
I learned I liked normal.
Luca wrote a reference.
Accurate.
No secret bonus.
No apartment.
No debt.
The engagement ring Vanessa returned through counsel went back to the jeweler under contract.
The bronze surveillance lamp was held as evidence.
The penthouse remained a penthouse.
Not a shrine.
Then Price asked Luca one final question before prosecution moved forward.
“Why did you sign the packet without reading?”
He answered:
“Because I thought routine meant safe.”
That became one lesson.
But not the whole lesson.
I had signed employment forms I did not fully read too.
Staff had shared schedule details because questions sounded ordinary.
Marco hid a warning because loyalty made honesty feel risky.
Vanessa stayed silent because admitting fraud would expose her.
Gavin turned everyone’s shortcuts into attack surfaces.
So the deeper lesson was not simply:
Read page three.
It was:
Know what gives someone power over you.
A signature.
An address.
A password.
A relationship.
A job.
A secret.
And stop calling access the same thing as trust.
Gavin’s rifle was never connected to the plot and prosecutors did not imply otherwise simply because it looked dramatic.
Samuel Ross’s unsent letter showed Gavin had received a more complicated account of the old acquisition than the revenge story he later embraced.
The Ross restitution process allowed former operators to decline public participation, preventing the company from turning repair into publicity.
Emma’s meeting with Vanessa ended as soon as Emma had the answer she wanted; closure did not require a long conversation.
Luca’s reference for Emma listed her actual duties and performance rather than praising her for saving his life.
