Chapter 10

Twenty-five years after Emma cried on the penthouse kitchen floor, Luca found the old engagement insurance packet in a digital archive.
“Emma.”
I looked up from breakfast.
“What?”
“Page three.”
I stared.
“No.”
He turned the laptop.
There it was.
Emergency governance authorization.
VANESSA BELLINI.
Seventy-two hours.
One electronic signature.
LUCA MORETTI.
He looked offended by his younger self.
“I was an idiot.”
“You were busy.”
“I signed without reading.”
“Yes.”
“Idiot.”
“Fine.”
We laughed.
We were older now.
Gray.
Slower.
Still together.
Moretti Holdings smaller.
River terminal diversified.
No emergency spouse proxies.
No family default control.
Independent CEO.
Luca honorary chair.
He hated honorary.
I loved it.
The archive asked whether to retain the packet permanently.
“Yes,” I said.
Luca stared.
“You wanted to trash the lamp.”
“Lamp was creepy.”
“This is useful.”
Documents can teach.
Objects can go.
My old phone with the copied murder recording had been destroyed years ago after forensic retention ended.
Good.
I did not need it.
Vanessa had not contacted us in a decade.
Gavin remained incarcerated.
Marco retired.
Price retired.
Celeste stayed out of finance.
Anthony stayed out of governance.
Systems remained.
That mattered more.
Then a young compliance officer called Luca.
“Mr. Moretti, we found a temporary proxy clause in an acquisition packet.”
He froze.
“What?”
She laughed nervously.
“It’s standard, and independent counsel approved. I just wanted you to know before signature.”
He looked at me.
I laughed.
Transparency had made the old ghost harmless.
Then one evening we attended an engagement party at another hotel.
Someone proposed.
Crowd cheered.
Luca leaned toward me.
“Terrifying.”
“Stop.”
We laughed.
A housekeeper passed carrying towels.
She looked tired.
Nothing more.
I thought of myself.
Kitchen floor.
Bruised cheek.
Shaking hands.
Trying to hide tears because rich people had dinner plans.
I wanted to tell her everything.
I did not.
She had her own life.
Not symbol.
Good.
Then at home I found an old red silk ribbon in a drawer.
For one second I thought of Vanessa’s dress.
Then realized it came from Christmas wrapping.
I threw it away.
Normal.
Luca asked:
“Do you remember exactly what I said that night?”
“You asked why I was crying.”
“And?”
“I lied.”
“You said you were fine.”
“Yes.”
“You were terrible liar.”
“Apparently not terrible enough. Vanessa invented a boyfriend.”
He groaned.
We laughed.
Then serious.
“Why didn’t you tell me immediately?”
Fear.
Job.
Power.
Not knowing whether Luca was safe.
Not knowing who owned the recording.
Not knowing what happened to employees who accused fiancées of murder.
All true.
I said:
“Because I didn’t know what would happen if I spoke.”
He nodded.
That was the real lesson.
A system is safe when people know what happens after they speak.
Not when leaders promise they are good.
Then one annual whistleblower audit showed reports up again.
Board worried.
Luca said:
“Maybe people trust it.”
Independent review confirmed.
He smiled like he had invented the idea.
I rolled my eyes.
For our anniversary, he gave me one printed page.
A screenshot from old forensic log.
6:14 PM.
FILE EXPORTED BY EMMA REED.
The moment I copied the murder recording.
I stared.
“Why would I want this?”
He looked suddenly unsure.
“I thought—”
I laughed.
Then tore it in half.
His mouth opened.
“Evidence!”
“It’s a copy.”
“History.”
“Trash.”
He laughed too.
Then I said:
“I don’t need proof anymore.”
That was true.
Courts had proof.
Archives had proof.
Systems had changed because of proof.
I did not need to carry it.
Later, I walked into our kitchen.
Phone on counter.
Luca cooking badly.
A recipe video played from his tablet.
A man’s voice said:
“Everything is ready.”
I stopped.
Body remembered.
Then Luca looked up.
He saw.
Paused.
“Okay?”
I breathed.
“Yes.”
Then:
“Keep playing.”
He did.
The man continued:
“Add the tomatoes.”
I started laughing.
Luca did too.
Twenty-five years earlier, those words had opened a door into a murder plan.
Now they belonged to dinner.
That was healing.
Not making the past harmless.
Not pretending Vanessa did not hurt me.
Not pretending Luca almost dying had been a misunderstanding.
Just letting ordinary words become ordinary again.
We ate.
No security alert.
No hidden camera.
No brake sabotage.
No emergency proxy.
No engagement dinner.
No one died.
Afterward Luca left his phone on the counter.
I picked it up.
He raised eyebrow.
“What?”
“I’m checking if you read page three.”
“There is no page three.”
“Good.”
I put it down.
Outside, Chicago moved.
Cars stopped when brakes worked.
Buildings stayed lit.
People signed documents they had read.
Most fiancées did not plot corporate coups.
Most housekeepers cleaned studies without finding murder recordings.
The world had room for ordinary again.
Luca turned off the kitchen light.
And for once—
“Everything is ready” meant dinner.
The final company audit that year showed no executive could transfer emergency voting power through a bundled signature packet. The finding took one line. No drama. No applause. Luca printed it anyway and stuck it on the refrigerator until I removed it.
“Why?”
“Because it’s ugly.”
“It’s governance.”
“It’s ugly governance.”
He sighed.
We kept the refrigerator clean.
That felt like a better ending.
The archive retained a redacted copy of the emergency proxy while sealing signatures and private account details.
Emma’s assault photographs remained sealed and were never used in training without her consent.
The annual whistleblower audit treated higher report volume as potentially healthy only after checking resolution quality.
The anniversary printout Emma tore was only a duplicate; the historical record remained intact.
The last kitchen contained ordinary smart-home devices, and nobody inspected them for hidden cameras.
