Chapter 6

Ten years after the agreement, Sofia died.

Eighty-two.

At home.

Natural.

She complained about weak coffee in the morning.

Took a nap.

Did not wake.

Luca arrived before the doctor.

For a few seconds, old panic returned.

Fake death.

Hidden plan.

Wrong certificate.

Then he stopped himself.

One attending physician confirmed.

Enough.

No second doctor.

No third.

Growth.

Sofia’s estate contained no surprises.

That alone felt like a miracle.

Updated will.

Clear trust schedule.

Independent trustee.

No hidden beneficiary.

No old seal.

Carlo’s ring went to Luca.

Sofia’s note:

Now it is only a ring.

He smiled.

Kept it in a drawer.

Never wore it.

Then Catherine attended the funeral.

Back row.

No one removed her.

No one brought her forward.

Afterward she said:

“She was better than all of us.”

Luca answered:

“She was herself.”

Good.

Catherine died two years later.

He attended quietly.

History did not require friendship.

Then Moretti Holdings published its historical review.

Not a glossy apology campaign.

A document.

Old guarantees.

Fake Bellandi development.

Foundation transfers.

Carlo’s staged death.

Roman’s control scheme.

Governance failures.

Where evidence was uncertain, report said uncertain.

Where company owed money, it paid.

Some people hated it.

Others appreciated.

Most employees cared about pensions and jobs.

Luca learned that family drama is enormous inside a family and often secondary to everyone else.

One retired dockworker told him:

“I don’t care which cousin betrayed which uncle.”

Then:

“I care that my medical benefit works.”

Fair.

Then Luca stepped down as executive chairman.

Independent successor.

He remained shareholder.

No operational title.

Some old men still called him Boss Moretti.

He rolled his eyes.

Then Vittorio contacted him.

Years since last conversation.

Public restaurant.

No family lawyers at table.

Vittorio looked old.

“I hated you.”

“I know.”

“I thought Carlo respected you more than me.”

“Why?”

“You were his son.”

Luca laughed.

“That helped less than you think.”

Vittorio nodded.

Then:

“I should have told you the agreement felt wrong.”

“Yes.”

“I thought I could control it.”

Luca smiled.

“There’s the family motto.”

Vittorio smiled too.

Once.

They parted.

No friendship.

Enough.

Then Daniel Caruso’s personal papers came to Luca after Melissa retired.

Mostly letters with Carlo.

Arguments.

Daniel:

If you fake your death, I quit.

Carlo:

Noted.

Luca laughed.

Then one unsent letter to Luca.

Your father thinks you are too impatient.

I think he is afraid of you.

Why?

Because Luca asked questions Carlo could not answer without surrendering control.

Daniel had understood.

Then:

If he comes back, make him explain himself without euphemisms.

Luca had.

Good.

Then one old Schedule C copy reached document-retention deadline.

Melissa called.

“Do you want it?”

“No.”

“Your mother might have.”

“She would have said no.”

Maybe.

They retained digital legal copy.

Destroyed paper.

No relic.

Then Moretti recovery company closed.

C.M. Recovery Partners, recreated under court supervision after Carlo’s private version was dismantled.

It paid final claim.

Sold final asset.

Filed dissolution.

ENTITY TERMINATED.

Luca stared at certificate.

Carlo had once tried to use that company to carry the family’s sins away quietly.

In the end, it worked only when everybody could see what it carried.

That was difference.

Then a niece asked Luca to review her prenup.

He refused.

“Get your own lawyer.”

“Why?”

“Because I’m family.”

She laughed.

Good.

Boundaries.

Then Luca underwent routine surgery.

Nurse handed consent.

He read every page.

Nico waited.

“Still checking for Schedule C?”

“Shut up.”

Surgery fine.

No hidden clause.

Normal paperwork becoming normal.

Then board asked to use old family seal in anniversary branding.

Luca said yes.

Everyone surprised.

“Why?”

“It’s a picture.”

Exactly.

Symbols lose danger when stripped of secret authority.

Then he finally wore Carlo’s ring once.

Not board meeting.

Not contract signing.

At Sofia’s memorial dinner.

No one noticed.

That was perfect.

A ring could be memory without command.

Sofia’s estate administrator sent beneficiaries a plain spreadsheet. Luca checked twice because its simplicity felt almost suspicious after a lifetime of coded structures.

Catherine’s presence at Sofia’s funeral caused no scene. She stayed until the last car left, then walked away alone.

The historical review used the word fraud where fraud was proven and failure where controls had merely been weak. Luca insisted on that distinction.

When Luca stepped down as chair, no Moretti relative automatically replaced him. The nominating committee interviewed candidates as if the surname were irrelevant.

Carlo’s ordinary watch kept worse time than Luca’s phone. He wore it anyway on quiet days because imperfection made it feel more personal than the family ring.

Later review note 1 for this stage recorded one concrete safeguard: the people responsible for the transaction had to identify the beneficiary, the successor decision-maker, the attached liabilities, and the independent reviewer before authority could move. The board adopted that requirement because the crisis in this chapter had shown exactly how ambiguity around those four facts could be exploited.
