Chapter 3

Daniel Reese told the story in pieces.

Mara made him start at the beginning.

He had worked for Robert Bellini for twelve years.

Security.

Logistics.

Private family matters.

Three years ago, when Sofia disappeared, Daniel helped Robert search for her.

He believed Marco had taken her.

That was Robert’s story.

Then six months later, Daniel found Sofia voluntarily living under an alias in Wisconsin.

Pregnant?

No.

This was earlier.

She told him she had left because Robert had taken control of Bellini Group after Victor became ill and was using her voting shares without consent.

She wanted out.

She also loved Marco.

Daniel did not report immediately.

Why?

Because Sofia showed him documents.

Board resolutions with forged signature.

Medical declaration falsely stating she lacked capacity.

Robert had been stripping her control before she even vanished.

There.

Not death fraud only.

Incapacity too.

Daniel helped her stay hidden.

Then pregnancy.

Years later? Need timeline. Sofia disappeared 3 years ago, relationship ongoing, baby now. Pregnancy recent. Fine.

Marco disappeared eight months ago because he went to meet Daniel after Sofia learned she was pregnant and Robert’s surveillance increased.

Daniel thought he could broker exit.

Instead Robert’s men intercepted Marco.

Daniel was forced to choose.

Help Robert or expose himself.

He chose partial cooperation.

That was how Marco ended in Room 614.

Then why not call Luca?

Because Robert had evidence of Daniel’s own crimes:

illegal surveillance,

bribery,

assault from years working security.

Self-preservation.

Again.

Then Sofia gave birth.

Robert planned to take baby into private guardianship and declare Sofia mentally incompetent.

Not kill.

Control.

Baby would be “protected” until Robert could secure Bellini shares permanently.

Marco would disappear again.

Maybe prisoned under fake charges.

Daniel finally broke when Robert ordered child separated from Sofia.

He helped Sofia escape last night.

He also disabled camera at Luca’s hotel through old credential? Wait service elevator at Luca's hotel. He had worked Bellini but transferred to Moretti six months ago. Yes, he infiltrated under Robert's request but turned partially.

He disabled camera so Sofia could pass unseen.

Then why follow in alley?

He wanted to make sure she reached safe door.

Why silver watch warning?

Sofia feared he might betray her under pressure.

Fair.

Then who injured Sofia?

Robert’s man during escape.

She had a cut on arm.

Not gunshot.

Where is Sofia now?

Daniel thought she planned to go to Mara? No.

She vanished after handing baby to Emily.

Maybe collapsed.

Hospitals checked.

One Jane Doe admitted at 11:05 PM with blood loss?

Yes.

A woman found in parking garage three blocks away.

No ID.

Unconscious.

Matched Sofia.

Alive.

Luca exhaled for first time.

Then Marco.

Robert moved him from lake house.

Where?

Daniel had one clue.

A transfer invoice:

B-17.

Cold-storage unit?

Bellini-owned biomedical storage maybe.

Let's make B-17 at old Bellini records warehouse.

Mara got warrant.

B-17 empty.

But recently occupied.

One mattress.

Chain.

Food.

Blood.

Marco’s DNA.

Then wall scratched:

NORTH.

Single word.

Maybe he heard trains? Direction?

A map on table showed Bellini properties.

North:

old quarry estate in Wisconsin.

Robert’s hunting lodge.

Police searched.

Empty.

Again.

But not pointless.

They found discarded packaging from neonatal formula same as baby.

And one burned document:

SOFIA BELLINI RESTORATION PETITION.

She had planned legal return.

If filed, Robert’s control challenged.

Then Luca understood.

The baby was not the primary threat.

Sofia was.

Alive.

Capable.

Ready to prove forged incapacity.

The child made hiding her impossible because birth records, medical care, DNA, all created evidence.

Robert needed her discredited before she reappeared.

Marco became leverage to silence her.

Then Robert’s public statement hit media.

“My niece Sofia Bellini, missing for three years, has been found in a state of severe psychological distress. The Bellini family is working with medical professionals to ensure her safety.”

He got ahead of story.

Classic.

He framed her before she woke.

Then Sofia woke.

Hospital room.

Mara and counsel present.

No Bellini family.

She asked first:

“Where’s the baby?”

“Safe.”

“With Luca?”

“Under court protection. Luca knows.”

She cried.

Then:

“Marco?”

No answer.

She understood.

Then she told fuller truth.

Marco had refused to trade Luca for freedom.

Robert wanted Marco to call Luca and demand Red Book? Different story. No, current motive is shares. Robert wanted Marco to sign affidavit saying Sofia had been unstable and Marco kidnapped her.

Marco refused.

So held.

Then why photograph Marco with baby?

Sofia took it after birth when Robert briefly allowed them together to pressure Marco.

She hid copy.

The photograph was proof Marco was alive.

The note “they know he survived” refers to whom?

Moretti family believed Marco dead.

Who now knows he survived?

Robert’s people.

But Luca already suspected maybe? No.

Meaning they know the baby survived? Let's parse hook says photo of brother holding same baby, back “Luca, they know he survived.” Could refer baby or brother. We assumed brother. Could be baby. Need twist! Nice. Sofia clarified:

“He” was not Marco.

The baby.

Luca froze.

“What?”

“They know he survived.”

Survived what?

A birth complication.

The baby was born not breathing.

Clinic staff revived him.

Robert’s plan had been to report stillbirth.

Why?

If child officially stillborn, there would be no independent heir and no medical record tying Sofia to current life.

But baby survived resuscitation.

Robert’s doctor was supposed to falsify death certificate.

Dr. Price refused.

Then child became dangerous evidence.

There.

The note referred to baby.

Not Marco.

Luca had read it wrong.

Important twist.

Then Sofia said:

“Marco is alive too.”

Yes.

But the warning was about the child.

Robert’s people knew the baby survived a birth they intended to erase legally.

Then Dr. Helen Price confirmed.

At private clinic, baby had respiratory failure.

Robert’s administrator prepared stillbirth paperwork before outcome known.

She refused sign.

Daniel helped remove records.

Baby survived.

That was when Robert decided to physically separate everyone.

Then legal stakes:

If Sofia alive and competent, she can reclaim shares.

If baby alive, he is her legal heir.

Robert cannot consolidate through “death” narrative.

The child’s existence creates succession continuity independent of Sofia’s immediate condition.

There.

Then one final clue.

Sofia had heard Robert say:

“Move Marco to the place Carlo used.”

Luca’s father Carlo.

Carlo had once used a secluded treatment facility during cancer.

St. Vincent Recovery Center.

Closed.

Moretti-owned historically.

Sold to Bellini seven years ago.

Luca stared.

Robert knew Moretti family secrets.

Of course.

Mara got warrant.

They went.

This time—

Marco was there.

Alive.

Barely conscious.

No dramatic shootout.

One guard surrendered.

Two fled and were caught.

Marco opened his eyes in ambulance.

Luca was not there; he waited at hospital.

Good.

When they reunited, Marco looked at him.

Then laughed weakly.

“Took you long enough.”

Luca punched his shoulder lightly, then stopped because IV.

Normal brother behavior after eight months? Emotional.

Then Marco whispered:

“Don’t trust Adrian.”

Luca froze.

His cousin.

The man who first rented Room 614.

The man who said he only helped Marco hide Sofia.

Marco continued:

“Adrian told Robert where we were.”

And suddenly the inside betrayal was no longer a possibility.

It had a name.

St. Vincent’s records showed recent food and medical purchases but no attempt to register Marco under his real name, supporting the unlawful-confinement case.

The recovered stillbirth paperwork had been drafted before the clinic knew the infant outcome, which became powerful evidence of planned record manipulation.

Daniel’s cooperation did not erase his earlier work for Robert; prosecutors documented both the help and the wrongdoing.

Sofia’s decision to tell Luca the warning referred to Gabriel, not Marco, resolved the ambiguity at the center of the photograph without changing Marco’s own survival.

The court sealed Gabriel’s genetic test from media access, separating necessary parentage proof from public spectacle.
