Chapter 2

Emily did not go anywhere.

That was Mara’s first decision.

Good.

Luca agreed immediately.

Also good.

Whoever wanted Emily had already crossed one line too many.

Her mother was moved to a protected hotel floor under city police supervision, not Moretti men.

The baby went to a children’s hospital with an emergency guardian appointed through court.

No family custody claims yet.

No assumptions.

Then Room 614.

Bellmont Hotel.

Former Moretti property.

Now Bellini-owned.

Mara got the warrant through a judge who had no business ties to either family.

By 1:40 AM, police entered.

Room empty.

Recently occupied.

One crib.

One bloodstained towel.

Formula.

Medical supplies.

A laptop wiped badly.

And one chair bolted to floor.

Not a hotel chair.

Restraint chair.

Luca looked at photographs later.

Marco had been held there.

Probably.

Then DNA.

Blood on towel matched Sofia Bellini from old medical sample.

So she was alive.

At least recently.

A second blood sample on chair matched Marco.

Also alive recently.

Then baby’s DNA.

Emergency testing established parentage.

Father:

Marco Moretti.

Mother:

Sofia Bellini.

Silence.

Luca sat in hospital conference room when Mara told him.

Nico stared.

“Jesus.”

The child joined Moretti and Bellini bloodlines.

But not in some magical succession twist yet.

More immediate:

Why hide him?

Why hold parents?

Then old history.

Marco and Sofia had known each other before their disappearances.

Secretly.

For years.

Impossible, Luca thought.

Then photographs surfaced from seized laptop cache.

Marco and Sofia together in Wisconsin.

At a diner.

At a pharmacy.

At a lake.

Dates spanning four years.

Before either disappeared.

They had a relationship.

Why secret?

Moretti-Bellini feud.

Business.

Family pride.

Maybe more.

Then one email fragment:

WE CANNOT LET VICTOR KNOW ABOUT THE PREGNANCY.

Victor Bellini.

Sofia’s father.

He had died two years ago.

Wait timeline: Sofia supposedly died three years ago. Victor died two years ago. So she disappeared first.

Another fragment:

CARLO KNOWS ABOUT US.

Luca’s father Carlo had known.

Carlo died one year ago.

So older generation knew pieces.

Then message from Marco:

IF LUCA FINDS OUT, HE’LL PROTECT THE CHILD BUT HE’LL GO TO WAR WITH YOUR FATHER.

Maybe true.

Maybe Marco underestimated Luca.

Then Bellmont Room 614 had one keycard log.

Entry by:

Adrian Moretti.

Luca’s cousin.

Hotel security head at Luca’s current hotel?

Actually Bellmont is Bellini-owned. Adrian had no role there.

But the keycard was issued under fake guest name using Adrian’s corporate card.

There.

Adrian linked.

Then Mara interviewed Adrian.

He came voluntarily.

Lawyer present.

Denied holding Marco or Sofia.

Admitted renting Room 614.

Why?

At Marco’s request.

Eight months ago.

Before Marco disappeared.

There.

Marco had asked Adrian to create a place outside Moretti properties.

For Sofia.

Why?

Because she was pregnant.

Marco feared Bellini family.

Adrian helped.

Then what went wrong?

Adrian said after baby was born, someone else found them.

Who?

Robert Bellini.

Sofia’s uncle.

Current Bellini chairman.

He wanted child hidden.

Why?

Because Marco and Sofia’s child complicated a pending merger? Maybe not enough. Let's make a family trust but avoid overused. Could be criminal evidence chain: the child proves Sofia alive, invalidating transfer of her shares and exposing that Bellini board illegally declared her dead and redistributed holdings. That's fresh.

Sofia owned 12% of Bellini Group.

When declared dead, her shares moved under survivorship agreement to Robert Bellini.

If Sofia was alive, that transfer was invalid.

Worse:

Robert had used her “death” to take board control.

The baby, as Sofia’s heir if she died for real, strengthened reason to keep her hidden.

But why hold Marco?

Because he knew.

And because his son could claim Sofia’s shares eventually.

So Robert’s motive was corporate control.

Not Moretti succession.

Bellini control.

Then why Adrian?

He admitted he accepted money from Robert three months ago.

For what?

Information about Marco’s movements.

He thought Robert wanted family negotiation.

He did not know about confinement.

Maybe.

Mara did not accept automatically.

Then silver-watch man.

Adrian wore silver watch.

Same model.

Emily’s warning.

Luca looked at him.

Adrian removed it slowly.

“I didn’t go near the alley.”

Hotel camera confirmed Adrian was in control room at 10:24.

So the man was dressed to resemble him.

Someone wanted Emily to fear Adrian—or anyone like him.

Why?

Maybe Sofia knew one security man with silver watch betrayed her.

Not necessarily Adrian.

Then four hotel supervisors.

One named Daniel Reese wore identical watch.

He disappeared after shift.

There.

Current inside helper.

His personnel file:

previously worked Bellini hotels.

Transferred to Moretti six months ago.

Recommended by Adrian.

Adrian looked sick.

“Robert sent him.”

Maybe.

Then laptop cache recovered one voice memo.

Sofia.

Weak.

“If you find this, they moved Marco again.”

Then:

“Daniel says Luca cannot be trusted.”

She paused.

“I don’t believe him.”

Then:

“The child is safest with Luca because Luca is the only man both families are afraid to lie to.”

Luca listened twice.

No pride.

Only anger.

Then:

“Emily is not part of this. She was supposed to be with her mother.”

Mara froze.

So Sofia knew Emily.

How?

Another recovered photo.

Emily and Sofia together months earlier.

Where?

Office lobby near Emily’s mother’s cleaning job.

Sofia had been hiding in same office tower.

She had watched Emily after school.

Maybe befriended her.

Emily did not remember because Sofia used different hair? Hmm.

Mara showed Emily carefully.

Emily said:

“That’s Miss Sophie.”

Alias.

There.

Sofia had befriended Emily for weeks.

Bought her hot chocolate.

Helped with homework.

Not random.

Why?

Because Sofia needed one civilian outside family networks she believed would not be searched.

An eight-year-old?

Risky.

But she may have planned emergency handoff.

That was not fair to Emily.

Important.

Then Emily remembered:

Miss Sophie once asked,

“If you ever saw a baby alone, what would you do?”

Emily answered:

“Find an adult.”

Sofia:

“Find the right adult.”

So she had rehearsed.

Not tonight specifically.

But contingency.

Then baby’s medical chart at Bellmont? Fake name.

Noah Reed.

Vaccines? Newborn.

One physician had visited Room 614.

Dr. Helen Price.

Not related to Mara.

Private pediatrician.

She came in.

Admitted treating baby.

Said she believed parents were under witness protection.

Daniel Reese arranged.

She never saw Marco.

Only Sofia and baby.

Then one night Sofia asked:

“If I disappear, can you call Luca Moretti?”

Doctor refused because Reese warned Luca was danger.

Again.

Someone had controlled narrative.

Then hospital record showed baby born in a small private clinic.

Mother under alias.

Father absent.

Maybe Marco already taken.

Then Luca asked:

“Where is Marco now?”

No answer.

Then Robert Bellini’s lawyer called Mara.

Robert wanted to cooperate.

That was suspicious.

He claimed Sofia was unstable.

Claimed Marco kidnapped her years ago.

Claimed baby endangered.

Classic counter-story.

Then he provided one video.

Sofia screaming at Marco:

“Don’t touch me!”

Marco backs away.

Date seven months ago.

Could be context.

Then second clip:

Marco saying:

“If Luca knows, we’re finished.”

Could mean anything.

Edited perhaps.

Mara demanded full files.

Robert refused without immunity discussion.

No.

Then Daniel Reese finally surfaced.

Not fleeing.

At police station.

He walked in with lawyer.

And one envelope.

Inside:

Marco’s blood-stained pendant chain clasp.

Not pendant—the baby had that.

Then one note in Marco’s handwriting:

LUCA, IF SOFIA GOT HIM TO YOU, DO NOT TRADE HIM FOR ME.

Luca’s face went white.

Daniel said:

“Marco gave me that three days ago.”

Mara leaned forward.

“Where?”

Daniel swallowed.

“At Robert Bellini’s lake house.”

Then:

“He’s alive.”

Luca’s hand tightened.

“Where is he now?”

Daniel looked at him.

“I don’t know.”

Then another truth:

“Because Sofia escaped last night.”

She was the bleeding woman.

“She took the baby.”

“And Robert moved Marco before she could come back.”

Luca stood.

Daniel raised both hands.

“I helped her.”

Maybe.

Then:

“I’m the man with the silver watch.”

Emily’s warning.

Silence.

Why would Sofia tell Emily to run from the man who helped her?

Daniel looked destroyed.

“Because she didn’t know if I would change my mind.”

That answer made terrible sense.

And now the only person who knew where Marco had been—

was a man Sofia herself did not fully trust.

Room 614’s crib and formula purchases were paid through a Bellini-controlled account, while the rental itself used Adrian’s card, documenting cooperation across both families.

Dr. Helen Price’s notes recorded a healthy newborn after resuscitation, making later attempts to describe the child as stillborn medically impossible.

Emily’s earlier meetings with Sofia under the alias Miss Sophie were confirmed by office-lobby cameras, proving the emergency handoff had been prepared in advance.

Daniel’s transfer into Moretti hotel security exposed a hiring weakness that later reforms addressed without assuming every transferred worker was compromised.

The court-appointed guardian ensured no family member could move Gabriel from the hospital simply by invoking a surname.

Years later, the family would connect this stage to safeguard 6: children could not be treated as evidence or leverage, private medical and ownership records required independent oversight, and no family member could disable security or voting controls alone simply because a surname gave them access.
