The Offer with a Condition

Chapter 06 - The Offer with a Condition

Richard Caldwell met Noah in a glass office forty stories above the city.

Everything about the room was designed to make visitors feel small.

Richard stood beside the window.

“Sit.”

Noah remained standing.

Richard sighed.

“You’re talented. I don’t want emotion to ruin your future.”

“My father is not an emotion.”

“You know what I mean.”

“I don’t think I do.”

Richard turned from the window.

“Caldwell Development is announcing you as part of our urban housing team. Investors have expectations. Clients have expectations.”

“And one of those expectations is that my father disappears?”

“One expectation is judgment.”

Noah laughed once.

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“That video has become a symbol. People are asking questions about your background. About your family. About why your father was dressed that way.”

“He came from work.”

“Yes. Exactly.”

Noah felt something cold settle inside him.

Richard walked to his desk and slid a folder forward.

Inside was Noah’s employment contract.

The salary was higher than anything Noah had imagined earning at twenty-three.

At the back was an additional page.

A media conduct agreement.

Noah read it twice.

“You want me to say the moment was spontaneous and that my father and I are not financially connected.”

“It protects both of you.”

“It says I should avoid public discussion of his employment.”

“Your father works for a subcontractor that has done business with us. That creates questions.”

Noah looked up.

“What subcontractor?”

Richard hesitated half a second too long.

“Ridgeway Labor Services.”

Noah knew the name.

It was printed on Henry’s pay stubs.

Richard closed the folder.

“Sign today, and this disappears.”

Noah thought of the foreclosure notice.

A salary like this could save Henry’s house.

He could sign, work six months, pay everything off.

Maybe compromise was not betrayal if it bought freedom.

Then Richard added quietly, “And Emma agrees that some distance from your father would be healthy.”

Noah’s hand stopped over the pen.

“Emma said that?”

Richard did not blink.

“She understands what’s at stake.”

Noah left without signing.

Ten minutes later, he called Emma.

She answered on the first ring.

“Noah, I’ve been trying to reach you.”

“Did you tell your father I should distance myself from mine?”

There was a long silence.

Then Emma said four words that changed everything.

“Not the way he means.”
