His Mother’s Voice

Chapter 15 - His Mother’s Voice
They found an old cassette player in Henry’s bedroom closet.
The machine hissed for several seconds.
Then Ellen Reed’s voice filled the room.
Noah had heard her in old home videos.
But never like this.
Close.
Direct.
Speaking to him.
“My sweet Noah,” she began.
He covered his mouth.
Emma sat beside him.
Henry stood near the doorway because he could not bring himself to sit.
Ellen talked about ordinary things first.
How Noah hated peas.
How he laughed when Henry sneezed.
How he had learned to pull himself up on the coffee table.
Then her voice weakened.
“If you’re hearing this after graduation, your daddy kept his promise.”
Henry turned away.
“He is going to make mistakes,” Ellen continued. “He will work too much. He will forget to say things out loud because he thinks love is something you prove with your hands.”
Noah began to cry.
“But look at those hands, baby. Look at them carefully. They will tell you where your life came from.”
Henry pressed his fist against his mouth.
Ellen paused on the tape.
“Do not spend your life trying to become too important for the people who carried you.”
Noah closed his eyes.
The graduation ceremony returned to him.
The dirty shirt.
The work gloves.
His own shame.
Then Ellen said something none of them expected.
“And Henry, if you are listening too, stop blaming yourself.”
Henry’s knees nearly gave way.
Emma stood and caught his arm.
Ellen’s voice trembled.
“What happened to me is not your fault.”
Henry wept openly.
For twenty-three years, he had apparently never listened to the tape past Noah’s message.
He had been too afraid.
Noah crossed the room and held him.
They stayed like that until the tape clicked off.
Later that night, Noah sat alone on the repaired porch.
He finally understood why Henry had refused Richard’s money.
Some debts could not be paid with a check.
His phone rang.
Dean Mercer.
“Noah,” the dean said, “I heard your job offer was withdrawn.”
“That’s correct.”
“I may know someone who watched your graduation video.”
Noah smiled faintly.
“A lot of people watched it.”
“This person runs one of the largest nonprofit housing engineering firms in the country.”
Noah sat up.
“And she wants to meet you tomorrow.”
May you like
But the opportunity came with one condition Noah had never expected.
She wanted Henry in the room too.
