The Signature That Stole Twelve Years

Chapter 08 - The Signature That Stole Twelve Years

The district attorney’s office was colder than Evelyn expected.

Not emotionally.

Literally.

She sat under an air-conditioning vent with her coat across her knees while Detective Chen placed a copy of the document in front of her.

The signature looked like hers.

That was the worst part.

It had the same long E.

The same sharp H.

Even the strange loop she used in the final letter of Hart.

But it was not hers.

“I didn’t sign this.”

“You’re certain?”

“Yes.”

The detective tapped the date.

“Where were you on March fourteenth, eleven years ago?”

Evelyn almost laughed.

“How would I remember?”

“We checked your passport.”

Evelyn stared at her.

“You were in France.”

A chill moved through her.

“Then why are you asking?”

“Because whoever executed this document knew your signature and assumed no one would question it.”

“Who notarized it?”

“A former contractor.”

“For whom?”

The detective closed the folder.

“Mercer Private Client Services.”

Evelyn leaned back.

There it was again.

Grant.

Not beside the truth.

Inside it.

“What did the document do?”

“It consented to transferring Nora Hart’s trust interest into a family-managed holding structure after she was declared legally unreachable.”

“She wasn’t unreachable.”

“We know.”

“She was sending me letters.”

“We know.”

Evelyn’s eyes narrowed.

“How?”

Detective Chen slid a second paper across the table.

A photocopy of a returned envelope.

Nora’s handwriting.

Grant’s office stamp.

Evelyn felt sick.

“Where did you get this?”

“Someone delivered a package to our office yesterday.”

“Who?”

“We’re working on that.”

Mason’s brass key came into Evelyn’s mind.

“What kind of package?”

The detective studied her.

“Why?”

“My nephew gave me a key.”

“To what?”

“I don’t know.”

Detective Chen’s expression sharpened.

“When you find out, call me before you open anything.”

Evelyn almost smiled.

“That seems unlikely.”

“Ms. Hart.”

“I’ve spent twelve years letting other people decide what I was allowed to know.”

The detective nodded once.

“I understand.”

“No, you don’t.”

“Maybe not.”

Then she leaned forward.

“But someone has spent eleven years making sure a child’s inheritance stayed under the control of people who were not supposed to have it. That means the child may be at risk.”

Evelyn went still.

“From Grant?”

“I didn’t say that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

By evening, Mason’s temporary kinship placement was approved.

He arrived at Evelyn’s townhouse with one borrowed backpack.

He stood inside the foyer and stared at the chandelier.

“You live here?”

“Yes.”

“By yourself?”

“Yes.”

“That’s weird.”

Evelyn blinked.

Then laughed for the first time in days.

“I suppose it is.”

She showed him the guest room.

He looked at the bed.

“Can I sleep on the couch?”

“Why?”

“Beds this clean make me nervous.”

Evelyn did not ask questions.

She brought blankets to the couch.

At midnight, she woke to a noise in the kitchen.

Mason was standing in front of the open refrigerator.

He had three yogurt cups in his backpack.

He froze when he saw her.

“I’m sorry.”

Evelyn’s chest ached.

“You don’t need permission to eat.”

“I wasn’t eating them.”

“I know.”

He looked down.

She sat at the kitchen island.

“When Nora and I were little, she used to hide cookies in her pillowcase.”

Mason looked up.

“Why?”

“Because our father controlled dessert.”

“That’s weird too.”

“Yes.”

He put the yogurt back.

Evelyn shook her head.

“Keep it.”

His eyes filled.

“It’ll go bad.”

“Then we’ll buy more.”

Mason stared at her as if abundance itself was suspicious.

Then he whispered, “Mom said you used to make her feel safe.”

Evelyn looked away.

“She was wrong.”

“No.”

Mason held the backpack against his chest.

“She said you stopped.”

That hurt more because it was true.

Before Evelyn could answer, the doorbell rang.

It was nearly one in the morning.

She checked the security camera.

Her father stood outside.

Alone.

May you like

In the rain.

Holding a small black metal box.
