The Place Where the Light Reached First

Chapter 13 - The Place Where the Light Reached First
The old lake house had been empty for eight years.
Richard refused to sell it.
Evelyn had always assumed sentiment was the reason.
Now she wondered whether fear was.
She arrived before dawn with Mason, Detective Chen, and an independent locksmith.
The lake was black glass.
Mason stood beside her in a borrowed jacket.
“My mom came here?”
“When we were young.”
“Did she like it?”
“She loved it.”
Evelyn looked toward the dark outline of the boathouse.
“She was better at swimming than me. Worse at losing.”
Mason smiled.
“Same.”
They waited.
At 5:41, sunlight broke over the trees.
A narrow beam struck the boathouse window.
Then the far wall.
Mason pointed.
“There.”
One plank looked newer than the others.
The locksmith removed it.
Behind the wall was a waterproof document tube.
Evelyn’s hands shook as she opened it.
Inside were copies of bank transfers.
Trust statements.
Emails.
And a handwritten memo from Nora.
Grant moved 3.2 million through North Bridge. Dad knows some, not all. If Evelyn sees this, tell her I’m sorry I ran. I thought leaving would stop them from hurting her.
Detective Chen took the documents.
“This could matter.”
Evelyn stared at the page.
“She thought she was protecting me.”
Mason looked at the lake.
“Everybody keeps doing that.”
“What?”
“Protecting people by not telling them stuff.”
Evelyn looked at him.
The simplicity of the sentence exposed the whole family.
Richard had lied to protect Evelyn.
Nora had disappeared to protect Evelyn.
Grant had hidden crimes to protect Richard.
Everyone had used love as an excuse for control.
“You’re right,” she said.
Mason kicked a pebble.
“Mom used to get mad when I lied to make her not worry.”
“She was a hypocrite.”
“What’s that?”
“An adult.”
He laughed.
Then a car door slammed outside.
Detective Chen turned.
A black SUV had stopped near the house.
Richard stepped out.
Alone.
Evelyn walked toward him.
“How did you know we were here?”
He looked at the document tube.
“Nora told me once that if she ever needed to hide something from Grant, she knew where.”
“You knew?”
“I hoped she had never used it.”
Detective Chen approached.
“Mr. Hart, I need to ask you some questions.”
Richard looked at Evelyn.
“Not in front of Mason.”
Mason crossed his arms.
“People always say that right before they lie.”
Richard flinched.
Evelyn almost felt sorry for him.
Almost.
They went inside the lake house.
Dust covered the furniture.
Richard stood in front of the fireplace where family photographs had once been displayed.
“I knew about the first transfers,” he said.
“How much?”
“Eight million over several years.”
Evelyn stared at him.
“You let Grant take eight million?”
“I thought he was moving it to stabilize the company.”
“He was moving some of it into shell accounts.”
“I found out later.”
“How much later?”
“Three years.”
“And you did nothing.”
Richard closed his eyes.
“He had copies of the forged beneficiary documents.”
Evelyn understood.
“He blackmailed you.”
“He said if I exposed him, he would expose me.”
“You deserved to be exposed.”
“Yes.”
The answer surprised her.
Richard sat down.
“I chose reputation over Nora.”
Mason stood in the doorway.
Richard saw him.
“And then I chose it again.”
Mason’s face did not change.
Richard’s voice broke.
“I am sorry.”
Mason looked at him for a long time.
Then he said, “That doesn’t help my mom.”
Richard nodded.
“No.”
“It doesn’t give me the years back.”
“No.”
“Then why are you saying it?”
Richard’s eyes filled.
“Because it is the only true thing I have left to give you.”
Mason looked at Evelyn.
She did not tell him what to do.
Finally he said, “Okay.”
Richard blinked.
“Okay?”
“I heard you.”
He turned away.
Not forgiveness.
Not yet.
Just truth being received.
Detective Chen’s phone rang.
She answered.
Her expression changed.
“What?”
She looked at Evelyn.
“Grant Mercer just filed an emergency petition challenging Mason’s kinship placement.”
Evelyn stood.
“On what grounds?”
The detective’s eyes hardened.
“Alleged kidnapping and financial manipulation.”
Mason looked at Evelyn.
“Can he make me leave?”
May you like
Evelyn took his hand.
“He can try.”
