The Woman Behind Daniel’s Anger

Chapter 09 - The Woman Behind Daniel’s Anger
Lillian arrived at Mara’s house after midnight.
She had packed a small suitcase.
“I left Arthur,” she said.
Evelyn stared at her. Lillian had been married for fifty-three years. She had endured Arthur’s stubbornness, Charles’s failures, and decades of being treated as though quietness meant agreement.
“Where will you go?”
“To my sister’s tomorrow. Tonight, I need to tell you the truth.”
They sat at the kitchen table.
Lillian folded her hands.
“When Harborlight began succeeding, Charles felt diminished. People introduced him as Evelyn Hart’s husband. He laughed publicly, but at home he blamed you.”
“I remember.”
“What you don’t know is what he told Daniel.”
When Daniel was a teenager, Charles said Evelyn had taken Harborlight from him after his investment company failed. He claimed the original money came from the Hart family.
It did not.
The money came from Evelyn’s mortgage, Lillian’s bracelet, and years of unpaid labor.
“Charles told Daniel that you promised to return the company to the Hart men,” Lillian continued. “He said you were holding it only until Daniel was old enough.”
Evelyn felt sick.
“Why would Charles do that?”
“Because he wanted Daniel’s admiration. And because Arthur encouraged him.”
Lillian wiped her eyes.
“Arthur could not accept that the most successful Hart was his daughter-in-law.”
Evelyn stood and walked to the window.
All those years, Daniel had not merely believed he was inheriting a company.
He believed he was reclaiming something stolen from his father.
“Did Daniel ever ask you if it was true?”
“Once. At Charles’s funeral.”
“And what did you say?”
Lillian looked down.
“I told him it was not the right time.”
Silence filled the kitchen.
“That was four years ago,” Evelyn said.
“I was afraid of losing him too.”
“So you let him hate me.”
Lillian began to cry.
Evelyn wanted to comfort her. Instead, she remained by the window.
Some pain required space before forgiveness could even be considered.
The next morning, Daniel received a package at Vanessa’s apartment.
Inside was his grandmother’s wedding ring and a handwritten note.
I will not watch another Hart man punish Evelyn for being stronger than him. Ask your grandfather what your father lied about.
Daniel read the message three times.
He drove to the family home.
Arthur sat alone in the dining room. The carpet had been cleaned, but a faint stain remained where the plate had fallen.
“Did Dad tell me the truth about Harborlight?” Daniel asked.
Arthur did not answer.
Daniel stepped closer.
“Was it ever his?”
Arthur looked toward the empty chair.
May you like
“No.”
The single word split Daniel’s life in two.
