Arthur’s Final Vote

Chapter 15 - Arthur’s Final Vote

The final board meeting began beneath the same brick walls Evelyn had once fought to preserve.

Outside, residents, employees, and reporters crowded the sidewalk.

Inside, Mara challenged the injunction. Sterling Ridge’s attorneys argued that Harborlight’s instability threatened its creditors.

Evelyn had one option.

She could personally guarantee the company’s debts long enough for the restructuring vote to proceed.

If the plan failed, she would lose her home, savings, and every asset not already tied to Harborlight.

Daniel pulled her aside.

“Don’t sign.”

“You told me Harborlight was worth sacrificing everything for.”

“I was wrong about what sacrifice meant.”

“If I refuse, Sterling Ridge wins.”

“Then let me guarantee it.”

“You don’t have enough.”

“I’ll spend the rest of my life paying.”

Evelyn touched his face.

It was the first affectionate gesture between them since the dinner.

“A mother’s job is not to let her child carry every disaster she failed to prevent.”

“And a son’s job isn’t to keep asking his mother to save him.”

For a moment, neither moved.

Then Evelyn signed.

The vote proceeded.

Two directors supported Vanessa.

Three supported the restructuring.

One abstained.

Arthur held the final vote.

Sterling Ridge’s attorney placed the mortgage documents before him.

“A vote against the sale will trigger enforcement of your loan,” she said.

Arthur looked toward Lillian.

She sat in the visitors’ section without her wedding ring.

Then he looked at Daniel.

Finally, he faced Evelyn.

“For most of my life, I believed the Hart name entitled the men who carried it to lead,” Arthur said. “Evelyn built something better than any of us deserved, and I punished her because I could not bear to admit it.”

Vanessa interrupted.

“This is not a confession booth.”

Arthur ignored her.

“I taught my son to resent his wife. I taught my grandson to confuse inheritance with worth. And when Evelyn resisted, I recorded her humiliation.”

A murmur spread through the room.

Arthur lifted the pen.

“I may lose my house today. But I will not lose what remains of my family to protect it.”

He voted for restructuring.

The motion passed.

Applause exploded outside the boardroom.

Vanessa stood motionless.

Sterling Ridge’s attorney gathered her files.

“You understand foreclosure proceedings will begin.”

Arthur nodded.

Lillian slowly walked toward him.

She did not replace her ring.

But she took his hand.

Vanessa turned to Daniel.

“You chose them over us.”

Daniel looked at the woman he had planned to marry.

“There was never an us. There was only what you could sell.”

Vanessa removed her engagement ring.

She placed it on the boardroom table.

Then she leaned close enough for only Daniel and Evelyn to hear.

“You think this is over?”

May you like

Her smile returned.

“I still have every message Daniel sent while we planned to remove you.”
