David's Last Voicemail

Chapter 06 - David's Last Voicemail
Samuel sent me the recording.
I waited until Lily was asleep before listening.
My son's voice filled the empty family room at the hospital.
“Sam, it's David. Call me when you get this.”
I covered my mouth.
Eleven months disappeared.
For one impossible second, my son was alive again.
Then his voice changed.
“I think somebody is billing Lily's trust for treatment she's not receiving.”
My eyes closed.
“I asked Vanessa about it. She says it's a paperwork problem, but Reed keeps avoiding me. There are orthopedic bills, home nursing, equipment. Lily doesn't need any of that.”
A pause.
“I want everything frozen tomorrow.”
Another pause.
Then David said something quieter.
“And don't tell Vanessa until I speak to you.”
The message ended.
I listened three times.
On the fourth, I heard something in the background.
A woman's voice.
Faint.
Angry.
Vanessa.
David hadn't been alone when he recorded it.
I took the phone directly to Detective Lena Brooks, the investigator assigned to Lily's case.
She listened.
Then asked me when David had died.
“Two days later.”
“Was his accident investigated?”
“The truck driver lost control.”
“Any reason to believe it wasn't an accident?”
“No.”
And I meant it.
I would not turn grief into conspiracy simply because I was angry.
Detective Brooks nodded.
“Good. We follow evidence, not fear.”
I respected her immediately.
By noon, police confirmed Vanessa's prescription history.
The sedative found in Lily's blood matched medication regularly filled under Vanessa's name.
But Vanessa denied giving it to Lily.
She blamed a nanny who had left months earlier.
There was only one problem.
There had never been a nanny.
Then came another surprise.
The hospital administration contacted Dr. Hayes.
They wanted him removed from Lily's case.
Officially, it was because the investigation created a “potential conflict.”
Unofficially, Ethan believed someone wanted him quiet.
He refused to leave without documenting everything.
That evening, he came to Lily's room carrying an old tablet.
“I found something.”
It was a scanned image from the hospital's archive.
Lily's first X-ray.
The one supposedly taken the night of her fall.
Even I could see something strange.
The name in the corner said LILY CARTER.
But beneath it, partially hidden by a digital overlay, was another name.
EMILY HART.
“Who is Emily Hart?” I asked.
Dr. Hayes shook his head.
“I don't know.”
But he had searched.
Emily Hart was fourteen years old.
She had broken her tibia six years earlier.
Lily's medical file contained Emily's X-ray.
Someone had taken an old image of another child's broken leg...
and placed my granddaughter's name over it.
I thought the worst discovery had already been made.
Then Ethan enlarged the file history.
The altered image had been uploaded from inside the hospital.
By a physician account.
He showed me the name.
Dr. Nolan Pierce.

Chief Medical Officer.
The same man who had just ordered Ethan removed from Lily's case.
