My Granddaughter’s Cast Fell Apart—Then We Found the Note Hidden Inside

Chapter 01 - My Granddaughter’s Cast Fell Apart—Then We Found the Note Hidden Inside

## chapter 01 - The Cast That Broke Too Easily

The first sound I heard when I entered Room 614 was plaster hitting the tile.

Not a crack.

Not a chip.

A full, hollow crash that stopped me halfway through the doorway.

My eight-year-old granddaughter, Lily Carter, stood barefoot beside her hospital bed in a pale blue gown, staring at the broken pieces of the thick white cast scattered around her feet.

Three seconds earlier, according to the nurse outside, Lily had been sitting on the edge of the bed.

Now she was standing.

On both legs.

The same child I had been told might need months of rehabilitation was putting her full weight on the leg doctors claimed had been badly fractured.

“Lily?”

She looked at me.

“Grandma, it didn’t hurt.”

I stared at her bare leg.

There was no swelling.

No bruising.

Nothing except the faint marks left by weeks inside plaster.

I had rushed to the hospital wearing the champagne-colored satin wrap set I had thrown on after receiving a call that Lily had been admitted overnight for surgery. I hadn't even changed my shoes.

Now I forgot how to breathe.

“Sweetheart,” I whispered, stepping toward her. “Who told you to take that off?”

“I didn’t.”

Her voice shook.

“It just felt loose.”

She pointed toward the largest broken section.

“I pulled a little... and it came apart.”

That made no sense.

According to Lily's stepmother, Vanessa, the cast had been reinforced two days earlier because Lily's fracture was “unstable.”

An unstable fracture.

A reinforced cast.

And my granddaughter had just removed it with her hands.

I crouched beside the pieces.

Before I could touch anything, Dr. Ethan Hayes hurried into the room. He was still wearing blue surgical scrubs beneath his white coat.

His eyes moved from Lily...

to her bare leg...

to the shattered cast.

His expression changed.

“Don't move anything.”

He knelt.

Lily reached for my hand.

Dr. Hayes lifted the largest curved piece of plaster.

Something white fluttered inside it.

At first, I thought it was part of the padding.

Then he pulled out a folded piece of lined paper.

A handwritten note.

“Doctor?” I asked.

He unfolded it.

I watched the blood drain from his face.

“What does it say?”

He didn't answer.

He read it again.

Then he slowly looked at Lily.

After that, he looked at me.

Finally, without saying a word, Dr. Hayes stood, walked to the hospital room door...

and locked it.

My heart began pounding.

“Dr. Hayes, what is happening?”

He lowered his voice.

“Mrs. Carter, I need you to listen carefully.”

He held up the note.

“Whoever put this inside Lily's cast believed she was in danger.”

I tightened my grip on Lily's hand.

“What does the note say?”

For a moment, the doctor hesitated.

Then he read the first sentence aloud.

“Her leg was never broken.”

And beneath it were six words that changed everything.

“Do not let Vanessa take her.”
