The Final Stand

Chapter 09 - The Final Stand
The air in the study turned dead quiet. The barrel of the 9mm handgun was trained squarely on Mark’s chest, just feet away.
Mark didn't back down. After everything he had discovered tonight—the drugging of his daughter, the murder of his wife, the years of systematic manipulation—he felt no fear left inside him. Only pure, burning resolve.
“You’re not getting out of this, Arthur,” Mark said firmly, keeping his eyes locked onto Arthur’s. “It’s over. Look at your computer screen.”
Arthur flicked his eyes down for a microsecond toward his laptop. On the bottom right corner of the screen, a small red notification window was flashing rapidly:
SECURITY BREACH: PERIMETER FENCE COMPROMISED. TACTICAL ENTRY DETECTED.
Before Arthur could react, the heavy glass windows of the study shattered inward with a deafening CRASH!
“POLICE! DROP THE WEAPON! DROP IT NOW!”
Flashbang grenades detonated with blinding light and thunderous booms inside the room. Thick white smoke filled the space instantly. Four heavily armed SWAT officers clad in black tactical gear burst through the shattered patio doors, their assault rifles pointed directly at Arthur.
Arthur screamed in shock, blinded by the flashbang. He fired a wild shot into the air—BANG—the bullet embedding itself deep into the plaster ceiling.
Mark reacted instantly. Taking advantage of Arthur’s disorientation, Mark lunged forward, grabbing Arthur’s gun hand and twisting his wrist with all the strength he possessed. Arthur let out a sharp cry of pain, dropping the pistol onto the Persian rug.
Mark delivered a powerful right hook straight to Arthur’s jaw. The blow landed with a sickening crunch, sending the billionaire crashing sideways across his mahogany desk, spilling scotch and scattering financial papers across the floor.
Two SWAT officers immediately tackled Arthur to the ground, pulling his arms violently behind his back and securing him in heavy-duty plastic flex-cuffs.
“Target secured! Room clear!” an officer yelled through the swirling smoke.
Officer Miller rushed into the room through the front entrance, his sidearm drawn, sweeping the area before spotting Mark standing over Arthur, breathing heavily, his knuckles bleeding slightly from the punch.
Miller walked up to Mark, placing a firm, respectful hand on his shoulder. “Are you hit, sir?”
Mark wiped a smear of soot from his forehead and looked down at Arthur Vance, who was coughing on the floor, his face bruised and bloody, his multi-million dollar empire crumbling to ashes around him in seconds.
“I’m fine,” Mark breathed, his voice steady. “Get this scum out of my sight.”
Officers dragged Arthur to his feet. As they led the disgraced CEO out of his mansion in handcuffs, Arthur glared at Mark with pure hatred.
“You think you won, Mark?!” Arthur yelled frantically as he was forced down the hallway. “Your firm is bankrupt! Your reputation is ruined! You have nothing left!”
Mark looked at him with complete indifference. “I have my daughter, Arthur. That’s everything.”
Officer Davis stepped up to the mahogany desk, inserting a encrypted federal flash drive into Arthur’s open laptop. “We got it all, Miller. Complete bank records, transfer receipts to Brenda’s offshore accounts, and encrypted emails detailing the hit on Sarah’s vehicle. This guy is going away for the rest of his natural life.”

Mark walked out of the mansion into the cool night air. The rain had finally stopped, and the clouds were clearing, revealing a brilliant sky filled with stars.
He climbed into the back of Officer Miller’s patrol car to be driven straight to the hospital where Lily was waiting.
