The Mastermind Revealed

Chapter 06 - The Mastermind Revealed
The world seemed to stop moving around Mark. The distant wail of sirens, the red and blue strobes flashing across the manicured lawn, the cool night breeze—everything dissolved into a terrifying white noise.
Sarah’s death three years ago had been ruled a horrific mechanical failure. Her car had gone off a steep embankment on a rainy night after the brake lines mysteriously failed. Mark had grieved for two years, crushed by guilt, before Brenda had walked into his life at a charity event, offering a shoulder to cry on and an affectionate hand to help raise a motherless girl.
It had all been a lie. A calculated, murderous setup from the very beginning.
“Who is he?!” Mark roared, grabbing Brenda by the shoulders and shaking her violently. “WHO PAID YOU? GENDER, NAME, TELL ME!”
“Mr. Reynolds, step back!” Officer Miller ordered, gently but firmly pulling Mark away before things escalated into assault. Miller pinned Brenda against the hood of the police cruiser. “Ma’am, if you cooperate now and provide the code to disarm that system, the district attorney will take your cooperation into account! If you keep quiet, you’re looking at accessory to murder, felony child abuse, and domestic terrorism charges!”
Brenda scoffed, tossing her hair back, though a flicker of genuine fear finally crossed her eyes. “You think I’m scared of prison? If I talk, he will make sure I don't survive my first night in a cell! He has people everywhere!”
“Eight minutes, Miller!” Officer Davis shouted from the front door, looking at his watch. “The signal wipe is going to trigger!”
Mark took a deep breath, forcing the violent rage down into a cold, terrifying focus. He looked at Brenda, realizing that appealing to her humanity was useless because she didn't have any. He needed to use her own greed against her.
“Brenda,” Mark said, stepping right up to her face, his voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. “You think he’s going to protect you? Look at yourself. You’re in handcuffs. You got caught kicking a child on video—we have security cameras in the hallway that you forgot about. You’re done. The moment that server wipes, you lose all your leverage over him. You become a loose end. Do you really think he’s going to let a loose end sit in a county jail where she can make a deal with the feds?”
Brenda’s smile faltered. Her eyes darted back and forth as Mark’s words sank in.
“The second that server goes dark,” Mark continued mercilessly, “you aren't valuable to him anymore. You’re a liability. You give us the code, you give us his name, and the feds put you in protective custody. You stay quiet, and you’re a dead woman walking before your arraignment.”
Brenda’s breathing grew rapid and shallow. She looked at the police officers, then at Mark’s uncompromising, icy glare. She realized Mark was right. She was a pawn that had just been taken off the board.
“Four minutes!” Davis called out from inside the house.
“Okay! OKAY!” Brenda shrieked, breaking down into genuine, terrified sobs. “The disarm code on the keypad is 0-9-1-2-8-8! Disarm it!”
Officer Miller immediately relayed the numbers into his radio. “Davis! Code is 0-9-1-2-8-8! Punch it in now!”
A long, excruciating silence filled the air as everyone waited outside. Seconds ticked away like hours.
Then, over the radio, Davis’s voice came through, filled with massive relief: “Code accepted! System disarmed! The drive is secure! I repeat, the drive is secure!”
Mark let out a breath he felt like he’d been holding for three years. He turned back to Brenda, who was now weeping pathetically against the police car.
“Now,” Mark said, his voice dropping like a hammer. “Who ordered Sarah’s death?”
Brenda swallowed hard, her voice trembling. “It... it was your business partner. The co-founder of your investment firm.”
Mark’s blood ran completely cold. “Arthur...?”
May you like
“Arthur Vance,” Brenda whispered. “He’s been embezzling millions from the firm’s offshore accounts for five years. Sarah found the accounting discrepancies three years ago right before her crash. She was going to go to the SEC. Arthur paid me to get close to you, ensure Lily was declared incapacitated so the trust fund could be used to cover the missing firm capital, and make sure you never looked into those books.”
Mark felt a sickening knot tie itself in his stomach. Arthur Vance wasn't just his business partner—he was his best friend. Arthur was Lily’s godfather. He was the man who had delivered the eulogy at Sarah’s funeral.
