The Venomous Threat

Chapter 04 - The Venomous Threat
Vanessa reached the bottom of the staircase, dumping the heavy leather bag onto the marble floor with a loud, metallic thud.
She had thrown on a dark trench coat, but her makeup was still ruined, black mascara smeared beneath her eyes like dark battle paint. She stepped close to where Adrian stood in front of Mia.
“You think you’ve won, don’t you, Adrian?” Vanessa purred, her voice dropping into a low, venomous sneer. “You think you’re playing the big protector hero.”
“Get out,” Adrian said coldly, not moving an inch.
“That brat is going to grow up just like her pathetic mother,” Vanessa hissed, leaning past Adrian’s shoulder to glare straight at Mia. “Fragile. Weak. Broken. Every time you look at her stupid, lopsided head for the next six months, you’re going to remember me. You’re going to remember that I marked her.”
Before Adrian could react, the front door burst open.
Adrian’s sister, Clara, stormed into the foyer, followed closely by her husband, Mark—a broad-shouldered former police officer who now ran a private security firm.
Clara took one look at Mia sitting trembling on the bench, saw the hacked blonde hair on the left side of her head, and let out a gasp of pure horror.
“You sick, disgusting monster!” Clara screamed, lunging forward toward Vanessa.
Mark instantly stepped in, catching Clara by the waist to hold her back, though his own eyes were fixed on Vanessa with absolute disgust. “Easy, Clara. Let me handle it.”
Vanessa scoffed, taking a step backward toward the open door. “Oh, look, the rescue team has arrived. How quaint.”
Mark stepped up beside Adrian, staring down at Vanessa with an intimidating, stone-cold glare. “I suggest you grab your bag and leave through that door right now, lady. The local precinct units are already on their way. I called them from the car.”
Vanessa’s smug expression faltered for a fraction of a second. She grabbed the handle of her suitcase, holding her chin high in a desperate attempt to maintain her pride.
“I’m leaving,” she sneered, looking back at Adrian. “Enjoy your ruined little life, Adrian. My lawyers will contact you in the morning. I’m taking half of everything you own.”
“You won't get a single dime,” Adrian said, his voice terrifyingly calm. “Because tomorrow morning, I’m filing a civil lawsuit for child abuse and intentional infliction of emotional distress, accompanied by the video footage. Your father will force you to sign a full waiver of assets just to keep you out of state prison.”
Vanessa opened her mouth to spit another insult, but the distant wail of police sirens echoing down the suburban street silenced her completely.
Panicked, she yanked her suitcase behind her, stepped out into the cool night air, and hurried down the brick driveway toward her sports car. The heavy engine roared to life, tires screeching against the asphalt as she sped away into the darkness.
The foyer fell into silence, save for the hum of the overhead lights.
Clara immediately dropped to her knees beside Mia, wrapping her arms around the little girl, crying quietly. “Oh, my sweet baby girl... I’m so sorry. I’m so, so sorry.”
Mark walked over to Adrian, putting a firm hand on his brother-in-law’s shoulder. “Are you okay, man?”
“No,” Adrian said, his voice shaking as the adrenaline began to wear off, leaving behind a deep, crushing exhaustion. “I let that monster into my home, Mark. I trusted her with my daughter.”
“You didn't know,” Mark said quietly. “Sociopaths are good at hiding who they are until they get pushed. But it’s over now. She’s gone, and we have the video evidence to destroy her in court.”
A red and blue flashing light reflected through the glass side-panels of the front door as a police cruiser pulled into the driveway.
Adrian took a deep breath, smoothing down his jacket. He looked over at Clara, who was gently lifting Mia’s chin, inspecting the damage to her hair with tender, loving care.
“Can you fix it, Clara?” Adrian asked quietly.
Clara looked up, her eyes filled with determination despite her tears. “I’m a professional stylist, Adrian. It’s short, but I can turn it into an adorable pixie cut. She’s still going to look like the prettiest girl in the world.”
Mia looked up at her aunt, a tiny, tentative spark of hope flickering in her blue eyes. “Really, Aunt Clara?”

“Really, my angel,” Clara smiled, kissing Mia’s nose.
Adrian walked over, kneeling beside them, holding both of their hands. “The bad dream is over, Mia. From tonight on, it’s just us. And nobody will ever hurt you again.”
